Thirty-fifth Annual Scholastic Olympics

Dear Principal:

On Thursday, November 10, the National Honor Society of Trenton Catholic Academy will sponsor its Thirty-fifth Annual Scholastic Olympics. This special academic competition is open to eighth grade students in elementary schools in Mercer and Northern Burlington Counties.
The purpose of the Olympics is to stimulate student interests in all areas in a spirit of friendly competition. There is a $25.00 entrance fee to help defray the costs of tests and awards. The enclosed packet includes:

The deadline for the completed Entry Form and Entrance Fee is Thursday, November 3.

Please share all information with your eighth graders teachers and make copies of any of these sheets for your teachers/parents, etc. There is a special sheet with information for your parents that you may want to hand out to the participants and their families. National Honor Society

TEST AREAS

These tests are general knowledge tests in the areas described below. Except for

Art, all tests contain multiple choice questions with some short answer/essay questions.
The tests are designed to be taken in one hour and are corrected electronically.

SUBJECT TEST FOCUS

ART Students will be given an 18” x 24” piece of paper, pencil and an eraser. They will be asked to complete a drawing from either a still life set up in the room or they will be asked to create a composition based on a real or imagined event. Drawings will be judged on the student’s comprehension and application of line, shape, form and value.

ENGLISH This test requires students to identify parts of speech and parts of

sentences. It will also include questions on punctuation and standard English usage. Special emphasis will be on pronoun usage and subject/verb agreement.

HISTORY This test will cover the formation of the American colonial

period, constitution period, Civil War, post reconstruction, and industrialization. Major social, economic and political developments of America in the 20th Century are also included.

MATHEMATICS This test covers arithmetic and introductory algebra.
CALCULATORS are permitted.

RELIGION This test will assess a student’s knowledge of Scripture, Liturgy and the Sacraments, Jesus and the Gospel, Morality, Prayer and the Liturgical Year (including Mary and the saints).

SCIENCE This test covers areas of general science. Topics include Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Science.

SPELLING This will be a written spelling test.

RULES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

CONTESTANTS

Each school is permitted to enter two students for each subject. An individual student may be entered in only one event. Students who are late for the testing time will not be admitted and will forfeit their participation.

SUPPLIES

ALL CONTESTANTS are to have sharpened # 2 pencils for all tests and calculators, if desired, for the Mathematics test. All other testing supplies will be provided.

PRIZES

Trophies for FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD PLACE winners will be awarded in each category. A team trophy will be awarded to the top three schools that score the most overall points. Team points will be awarded as follows:

TIME SCHEDULE

2:45 – 3:15 REGISTRATION will take place outside the school cafeteria. At least one adult from your school should accompany your students.

3:30 – 4:30 TESTING Special reminder: Late students will not be admitted to the
testing rooms.

4:45 – 5:45 -6:00* AWARDS Parents and friends are invited to attend the Awards
Ceremony in the auditorium. *End time based on previous years.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF STUDENT PARTICIPANTS

1.  If parents are bringing their child to compete, the child should arrive no later than 3:10 for registration. Students who do not register are not permitted to compete.

2.  Students will be served juice and cookies in our cafeteria prior to the test.

3.  The time schedule is printed below.

4.  Administrators and faculty from Trenton Catholic Academy will be in attendance to administer and proctor testing and to present awards.

5.  Members of the Trenton Catholic Academy chapter of the National Honor Society assist teachers and administrators throughout the afternoon. The chapter president will emcee the Awards Ceremony.

6.  Tests are machine corrected.

7.  Awards: Certificate of Participation for all students, medals for the top three scores in each subject, trophies for the top three schools with the most points.

4:45 – 5:45 - 6:00* AWARDS. Parents and friends are invited to attend the Awards

Ceremony in the cafeteria. This ceremony concludes at approximately at 5:45 - 6:00pm. (*Time based on previous years’ events.)

*Pick up for students should be no later than 6:00pm.
