Monash University Baseball Club Member Protection Policy
Monash University Baseball Club has an obligation to keep its members and guests free from harassment.
Harassment in sport denies people the right to be treated with respect, dignity and fairness.
In general terms, harassment is: behaviour by one person towards another that is offensive, abusive, belittling or threatening. It is unwelcome and the sort of behaviour a reasonable person would recognize as unwelcome.
Examples of harassment include:
· Forcing an athlete to do excessive exercises as punishment
· Embarrassing/humiliating an athlete in front of others
· Subjecting an athlete to negative attitudes
· Encouraging athletes to injure opposing athletes
· Bullying or shouting abuse to motivate an athlete to better performances
· Abusing umpires
· Sledging
Harassment can have the following impacts if not dealt with:
· Interfere with and affect an individual’s physical and emotional health
· Reduce productivity and effectiveness
· Reduce job and sporting opportunities
· Undermine self-esteem
· Create a hostile or unpleasant environment
· Lower morale in an organisation
· Increase turnover of staff, volunteers and members
Monash University Baseball Club condemns any form of harassment. To ensure that we have effective coping mechanisms the Baseball Club shall:
· Have a Member Protection Officer nominated by the committee each year
· Train the Member Protection Officer in appropriate techniques to deal with a situation that may arise
· Record any issues that are reported
· Actively promote the policy to members in power (committee members and coaches).
The Member Protection Officer shall:
· Mediate any situation that arises
· Refer the situation to the Club President or Club Secretary as necessary.
· Provide the policy to club members as requested
· Ensure the privacy of the parties involved
The Club Official will:
· Ensure the privacy of the parties involved
· Investigate the situation
· Discipline parties as required
· Provide counseling and support as required
Players:
Monash University Baseball Club expects our players to:
· Play by the rules.
· Not argue with the umpires (send the coach/manager to have a discussion at an appropriate time)
· Cooperate with your coach, team mates and opponents.
· Be a good sport
