The Missouri House Committee on General Laws discussed a proposal aiming to protect the second amendment rights of Missouri citizens.

House Bill fourteen thirty-nine creates the Second Amendment Preservation Act.

The legislation makes all federal gun laws intended to infringe upon Missourians second amendment rights null and void.

The sponsor of the proposal claims his bill would stop the federal government from coming into the state and affecting one’s constitutional rights.

Super:Rep. Doug Funderburk

(R) St. Peters

“ So lets say their would be an attempt at a federal gun grab, this legislation would make it illegal for that to happen in the state of Missouri and would give Missouri standing to adjudicate one defend your rights and two adjudicate those who violate the law.”

The bill creates a class A misdemeanor crime for any federal government employee who enforces any federal law which aims to infringe upon Missourians second amendment rights.

However opponents fear the proposal could mean less of a police presence and more violence in their districts.

Super:Rep. Mike Colona

(D) St. Louis

“You know the feds have limited resources, the grunt work in my jurisdiction is done by the St. Louis city police department.

If we pass something in our constitution that says they can’t help the feds anymore… and you know what, the streets are going to be a little more dangerous.”

Following the hearing no further action was taken on the proposal.

The legislation is similar to last year’s House Bill four thirty-six which was vetoed by the governor…reporting from the State Capitol, I’m Jonathan Lorenz.
