Supplies for the Mark Stewart Watercolor Classes

I will be working on an 11"x14" sheet of 140lb arches cold press watercolor paper. You can certainly work on smaller paper. I suggest that you bring a sheet no bigger than that . . . and no smaller than 10"x12". Bring 2 additional sheets, as I will have a few warm up exercises that I hope you will enjoy. You can bring individual sheets or use a watercolor block.

I would also like you to bring a sketch pad (preferably Strathmore or Canson) in the size of 9"x12" or 11"x14".

Bring your watercolor pallet, your watercolors, brushes, and any other tools (pencils, knives, rags, water jars) you use to make a painting. One thing - I hope everyone has a large brush . . . like a 1" wide flat brush. What I've noticed is that most folks try to cover large areas of color with small brushes . . . so bring a big one and we'll use it.

I use Winsor & Newton paint . . . cadmium yellow, cadmium red, cadmium orange, sap green permanent, hookers green, brown madder, sepia, burnt umber, raw umber, Winsor blue, Winsor violet, and cerulean blue.

I will generally have no problem with the colors you wish to bring . . . but people inevitably ask what I use because they can't achieve the same colors on the paper that I do - it's because they don't have the colors I listed above. I know paints can be expensive and you can come to the first session with your usual paints, but some of you will find that you will need to supplement what you have with the paints I have listed.

I staple mount my watercolor paper on a masonite board - but you can bring a watercolor block, or mount your paper with tape to any hard surface you like.
