MISY 926 Strategic Management of Information Technology

Course Description

This course addresses some contemporary issues faced by general managers — e.g., globalization, and time compression. The course defines the information technology strategies of an organization. It will examine principles and concepts of strategic information technology systems, and systems development as it relates to information technology management strategy.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the student will:

  1. Know the meaning of an IT Strategic Management Process to deliver business value through IT leadership.
  2. Understand the changing nature of the competitive business environment.
  3. Be familiar with the different schools of thought of IT Strategy formulation.
  4. Know the issues associated with effective IT Strategy implementation.
  5. Gain knowledge of how to transform the business via IT dynamic capabilities.
  6. Explore the ways to enhance alignment between Business and IT.
  7. Apply the most important management practices for driving business value from IT investments.

Required Textbook

No textbook is required. Very detailed slides and lecture notes will be provided. Students may optionally research the internet and local libraries for additional subject related information when needed.

Grading

Final Exam / 25% / There will be one comprehensive final exam, which will count for 25% of your course grade. The final exam will be given during the scheduled final exam week. This will be an in class written exam.
Midterm Exam / 20% / There will be one midterm exam, which will count for 25% of your course grade. The midterm exam will be assigned at the half-way point in the class. This will be a take-home exercise.
CSLO / 20% / Course Student Learning Objective Essay
Homework Assignments / 15% / You will be assigned 3 homework assignments worth 5 points each.
Case Studies / 20% / You will be assigned 4 case study assignments, worth 5 points each.

Final Exam: The week before the final exam is given there will be a review session in class. The final exam will be an in-class assignment during the last week of the term (Final Exam Week).

Academic Dishonesty

All of your assignments and class activities should represent your own individual effort. Your assignments should be done without consultation with other students (or the Internet) and you should not share your work with others. Any assignment submitted that is copied from the internet or essentially the same as someone else’s will not receive credit.
