Mississippi Valley State University is located in Itta Bena, MS, 14000 Highway 82 West. Interstate Highway I-55 that connects Jackson, MS and Memphis, TN is the interstate highway closest to the campus. Ruleville, MS, is approximately 30 miles northwest of Itta Bena. Greenwood, MS, a town of approximately 20,000, is 5 miles east of Itta Bena. Greenwood (not to be confused with Greenville) is the nearest urban place serving the University. The University is approximately 100 miles north of Jackson, MS and 120 south of Memphis, TN. Most air travelers use either the Jackson or Memphis airport. Limited commuter airline flights into Greenville, MS, 50 miles to the west are also available.
For those using the Memphis Airport:
Take I-55 South from Memphis to Winona, MS. Exit to the right on US Highway 82 West and continue on US 82 West to Greenwood. As you enter Greenwood look for the hotels. Both the Best Western (next door to Shoney’s) and the Hampton Inn (across from Wal-Mart) are on the left. The Ramada Inn is on the right. Mapquest lists the trip as 130 miles and allows 2 hours and 17 minutes driving time. Some of us have done it more expeditiously.
The Itta Bena and University are approximately 12 minutes west of Greenwood. The University entrance gate is directly off Highway 82 West. Do not follow the directional arrow to Itta Bena. Stay on Highway 82 West.
For those using the Jackson Airport:
Take I-55 North to the Winona exit and turn left on US Highway 82 West and continue to Greenwood and follow the directions outlined above to Greenwood and to the campus. Mapquest lists the Jackson – Itta Bena trip as 140 miles with a driving time of 2 hours and 31 minutes.
The Greenville (again, not to be confused with Greenwood) airport has two incoming and two outgoing connecting flights with Memphis daily. The incoming flights are at 3:30 and 8:30 PM. The departures are at 7 AM and 5PM.
