MISSION STATEMENT
FOR THE ACCOUNTING
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The accounting program is a professional, student-centered program to prepare students for entry-level and long-term professional careers in public accounting, private accounting, government accounting, and business. The program builds on the BrooklynCollege core to produce broadly-educated students prepared for life-long learning. We include courses from Philosophy and Computer Science, as well as some offerings from the Business and Economics course listing. Undergraduate students are also prepared by the program for graduate school. A great emphasis is placed upon the importance of communication skills, ability to think logically and analytically, computer skills, writing abilities, and professional ethics in succeeding in today’s business world.
There are two tracks in accounting. one for students who are interested in taking the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam and one for students who are interested in an accounting major but have no interest in becoming CPAs.
PROGRAM GOALS FOR STUDENT LEARNING
FOR THE ACCOUNTING PROGRAM OF STUDY
(1) Students will develop competency in the field of accounting. The program will produce knowledgeable accounting graduates for the public, private, government, not-for-profit and corporate sectors.
(2)Students will develop competency in accounting theory so that they will have sufficient background if they decide to go to graduate school.
(3) Students will develop competency in written communication and verbal communication skills.
(4) Students will develop competency in the legal and international environments in which today’s businesses must operate.
(5) Students will develop competency in the use of technology as a vital tool for accounting.
(6) Students will develop competency in microeconomics and macroeconomics and in other quantitative methodologies and be able to use this knowledge to solve business problems.
(7) Students will acquire competence in the area of finance and be able to use this knowledge in the solution of finance problems that accountants face.
MISSION STATEMENT
FOR THE BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT, AND FINANCE (BMF)
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The objective of the program in Business, Management, and Finance is to prepare majors for careers in marketing, management, human resource management, or finance. This interdisciplinary program builds upon a firm technical foundation in such areas as mathematics, computer information science, accounting, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and corporate finance. It provides students with a strong grounding in the liberal arts and builds upon the renowned core curriculum of BrooklynCollege. A great emphasis is placed upon the importance of communication skills, ability to think logically and analytically, computer skills, writing abilities, and ethics in succeeding in today’s business world. The business program helps students appreciate the interrelationships among the various disciplines and how solutions to business problems often require a multidisciplinary approach. Finally, the program attempts to provide the foundation and tools so that graduates will have the ability and desire to acquire knowledge throughout their entire lives, i.e., lifelong learning.

PROGRAM OF STUDY
(1) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the functional areas of business: marketing, management, finance, economics, and quantitative analysis.
(2) Students will develop competency in mathematics and statistics and be able to apply quantitative reasoning to the solution of business problems.
(3) Students will develop competency in written communication and verbal communication skills.
(4) Students will develop competency in the legal and international environments in which today’s businesses must operate.
(5) Students will develop competency in the use of technology and the use of the Internet as a research tool.
(6) Students will develop competency in microeconomics and macroeconomics and be able to use this knowledge to solve business problems.
(7) Students will acquire competence in the area of finance and be able use this knowledge in the solution of finance problems.
(8) Students will develop the ability to integrate the knowledge from the various functional areas of business and be able to critically analyze a problem and develop a solution.
THE ECONOMICS
PROGRAM OF STUDY
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Economics Program is to provide students with the tools required to pursue a professional career or higher education in economics or a related discipline; to understand and analyze economic problems; and to expand students’ horizons and the possibilities available to them. The program is designed to give students the flexibility to choose between specializing in a field in economics or completing a minor while pursuing a specialization in business, accounting or a major outside the Economics Department. The Economics area strives to offer a comprehensive program, while providing expertise and service to the Business and the Accounting areas; and to improve academic quality, both in the classroom and in faculty research. Students majoring in the economics program go on to pursue advanced degrees in economics or other fields, work in government, or private companies.
The program also offers joint programs with Business, Management and Accounting, and the Department of Computer and Information Science, collaborates with the School of Education, Women’s Studies, Mathematics, and offers a minor in economics to students graduating in other disciplines.

FOR THE ECONOMICS PROGRAM
The objective of the program in Economics is to prepare the students to careers or graduate studies in public policy, global economics, financial economics, and political economy. The general educational goal of the program is to offer a high quality economics program with an in depth understanding of major theoretical and applied economic concepts and issues. The program emphasizes critical and analytical thinking, communicating complex ideas, and provides a solid foundation with analytical and quantitative background required to treat the subjects rigorously.
Knowledge and Skills Goals
The knowledge goals include an understanding of the core areas of economics in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative economics; knowledge and understanding of public policy, international/global issues, monetary issues, finance, and political economy; appreciation of social diversity.
The skills goals include ability to apply general economic principles to the real world, ability to use the tools of economic analysis to understand policy issues; ability to acquire and use data to evaluate competing theories, use of statistical and quantitative skills to test theories, oral and written communication, problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, use of technology.
The program offers five concentrations providing different ways to acquire these goals. These are Enterprise and Public Policy; International Economics; Financial Economics; Political Economy; Economic Analysis.
