Mission CISD Concussion Management Protocol
If a MCISD student/athlete demonstrates signs or symptoms consistent with a concussion, we will follow the “Heads Up” 4 step Action Plan:
- The MCISD student/athlete shall be immediately removed from athletics/practice/game/competition.
- The MCISD student/athlete will be evaluated by the appropriate health care professional as soon as practicable.
- Inform the MCISD student/athlete’s parent/guardian about the possible concussion and give them information on concussions.
- If it is determined that the MCISD student/athlete has suffered a concussion, they shall not be allowed to return to participation that day regardless of how quickly the signs or symptoms of the concussion resolve. They shall be kept from all activity until a physician indicates they are symptom free and gives clearance to return to activity as described below. A coach of an interscholastic athletics team may not authorize a MCISD student/athletes return to play.
MCISD encourages parent/guardians to communicate with the MCISD Athletic Trainers and coaches if you suspect that your student/athlete has sustained a concussion during athletics, practice, games, competitions, or even while at home. Contact numbers for the MCISD Athletic Trainers are listed on back of this information sheet. Please keep this information for your records and future reference.
According to the MCISD Concussion Management Return to Play Protocol, the supervised progression of activities is as follows:
- High school student/athletes MUST be symptom free for 24 continuous hours prior to initiating the Return to Play progression. Junior High student/athletes MUST be symptom free for 120 continuoushours prior to initiating the Return to Play progression.
- Progress continues at 24 hour intervals for both High School and Junior High athletes as long as the student/athlete is symptom free at each Phase & Step.
- If any symptoms return during the progression, activity is discontinued and the student/athlete must be reevaluated by the MCISD Athletic Trainer. When the RTP progression restarts, the student/athlete begins again at Phase 1.
- Even if the attending Physician decides the MCISD Student/Athlete did not sustain a concussion, the student/athlete must still complete the Return to Play Protocol.
Phase 1:
No physical activity at school or home until the HS student/athlete is symptom free for 24 continuous hours and the JH student/athlete is symptom free for 120 continuous hours; and has returned the completed & signed Physicians’ Return to Play Clearance & the Parent / Guardian Clearance Consents.
Phase 2:
Step 1.Begin light aerobic exercise: 5-10 minutes on an exercise bike, or light jog. No weight
lifting, resistance training or any other exercise.
Step 2.Moderate aerobic exercise: 15-20 minutes of running at a moderate intensity in the gym or on the field without a helmet or other athletic equipment.
Step 3.Non-contact training drills in full uniform. May begin weight lifting, resistance training, and other exercises.
Step 4.Full contact practice or training.
Step 5.Full game play.
NOTE: The MCISD Athletic Trainer may follow a more restrictive Return to Play Protocol at their discretion, but must meet the minimum guidelines listed above. Junior High student/athletes will be subject to a more conservative Return to Play Protocol.
