Course Description

At University Lake School, Spanish is an integrated and an engaging subject beginning in pre- kindergarten. Students are guided through the Spanish language each year through various activities and literature. The Spanish teachers use differentiation in the classroom and keep students actively learning by using a method called TPRS (Total Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Spanish classes enhance students’ language abilities as well as their knowledge in geography, history and culture of Spanish-speaking places.By the time students reach sixthgrade, Spanish is spoken in the classroom. Instructions and discussions are often orally given in the target language, with clarification in English given as necessary. The majority of written material is entirely in Spanish.

Other Needed Materials:

One pocket folder, two notebooks (one for notes, one for journaling), 3x5 notecards, a pen or pencil. Other materials will be provided by the teacher.

Goals

  • Students will develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the Spanish language as well as for the diverse cultures found throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The department will be choosing a theme that will relate to our text, as well as be student inspired as our focus for the year.
  • Students will develop a confidence with second language learning and deepen their understanding of their native language.
  • Students will enhance academic skills such as taking notes and presenting (in Spanish) as well as continuing the idea of Balanced Literacy (in Spanish).
  • Students will put forth their best efforts and strive to improve their abilities, as well as engage in the language learning process.

Assignments/Projects

Students are expected to turn in all work on the due date.

If a student turns in an assignment/project…

  • one school day after the due date, the assignment will be graded and then be marked down 10%
  • two school days after the due date, the assignment will be graded and then marked down 20%
  • three school days after the due date, the assignment will be graded and then marked down 30%
  • four school days after the due date, the assignment will be graded and then marked down 40%
  • five school days or more after the due date, the assignment will be graded and then marked down 50%

Test Re-take Policy

Mastery of content is very important as the curriculum spirals and new studies are built upon prior knowledge; therefore, any student scoring below 75% on a test or quiz will be asked to continue to study and be reassessed. Any student scoring between76-89% may re-take the test. Test grades will be averaged and the averaged grade will replace the initial grade.

Attendance Policy

  • Any anticipated absences should be discussed with MissDallman prior to departure so that arrangements can be made for missed work. Please see Mrs. Ernster for the proper anticipated absence form.
  • Absence due to illness will result in a deadline extension for daily work equal to the number of days missed. Long-term assignments retain their due date pending discussion with MissDallman.
  • Upon returning from unexpected absence, the student should look in the designated location for make-up materials, as well as meet with Miss Dallman to obtain class information and confirm deadlines for completing work.
