Hi Alan
Keith & Jean - March 2015 Update
So I reported last year, our findings on A frame use in France and Spain and that we had planned to go to Portugal by the shortest possible route to avoid fines etc in Spain. We didn’t go straight to Portugal as planned as there appeared no reason to do so.
This year, following our previous experience we decided not to bother with the sub-standard roads in Portugal but drive straight through France into Spain via Biarritz then amble the 700 miles of good Spanish roads, south to a campsite near Cadiz.
Once again, the hype about towing with A frames in Spain gave us a slightly uneasy feeling for a short while after crossing the border. However, once again after encountering many police cars with ample opportunity to pull us over, yet not doing so, took away the unnecessary angst, we enjoyed the journey.
We used a combination of roads, some toll, some not, but mainly dual carriageways. Our journey took us from Biarritz, via Burgos, Salamanca, Caceres, Seville and ended at Zahora, 30 miles south of Cadiz.
After a relaxing 30 days soaking up the January/February sun we set off to return by the same route.
Once again, a further 700 miles of Spanish roads to the French border, numerous police, travelling in our direction and sometimes doing spot checks on vehicles and yet we just cruised by.
I should point out that our RV is a big one. There is no way the police didn’t spot us (see pic).
I have listened to so many bitter arguments on forums about the rights and wrongs of this subject and yet I personally have never met, nor even spoken online to someone that has actually been fined for this.
I am not suggesting that this hasn’t happened but I can only report my own findings, and had we suffered a bad experience last year we would not have wished to repeat it this year...
And by the way....we’ll be doing it again next winter too!
Hope this helps...Keith & Jean Perry
