Monday, 03/12: Recognize exposition and voiceover (1.3.8 J, 1.3.8 C).

  8. What are the benefits to keeping a diary? What are the benefits for Anne during this crisis situation?
  9. Mr. Frank tells Anne, “There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind” (379). What does he mean? Do you agree? Support your opinion with examples from the play as well as from your own knowledge or experiences.
  10. Take notes on characterization, words to know, questions you have, and anything else of significance that you would like to use for discussion.

  6. p. 388 col. B: Analyze the conversation between Mrs. Frank and Anne. (“I’m not afraid that anyone is going…make something of myself!”)
  7. What is the significance of Mr. Dussel’s news? How does it compare to that of Miep and Mr. Kraler?
  8. How was dramatic license used for Dussel’s character? Why would Goodrich and Hackett make this decision?

  1. What is Mr. Van Daan’s purpose for being downstairs at the beginning of the scene? What techniques of characterization have been used to provide motivation for these behaviors? (In other words, what clues have you seen earlier in the play to suggest this behavior?)
  2. Find an example of dramatic irony from this scene.
  3. p. 400 col. A. Analyze Anne’s quote: “I’m a terrible coward…don’t love anyone but you.”
  4. p. 400 col. A. Analyze Mr. Frank’s quote: “There is so little that we parents…build your own character.”

Friday, 03/16: Recognize foreshadowing, dramatic irony, conflict, antagonist(1.3.8 J, 1.3.8 C, 1.3.8 B).

  4. Record at least three themes that have developed throughout Act I. Remember that theme is not one word. Refer to your analytical writing packet for a refresher on theme.
  5. Explore Mr. Van Daan’s relationship with his son.
  6. What does the scarf symbolize?
  7. Mr. Frank does not want Anne to sing the Hanukkah song at first (p. 405 col.B), but he asks Anne to sing the song by the end of the scene. Why? How does singing the song affect the mood as the curtain falls on Act I?
