Medicines Information Operational sub-Group (MIOG)
of the All Wales Chief Pharmacists Committee (AWCPC)
Annual Report 2015
1)Introduction
The Medicines Information Operational sub-Group (MIOG) was established in September 2011 and a Work Plan was agreed with the AWCPC.
The MIOG membership now consists of members from both primary and secondary care, these are:-
- Medicines Information Pharmacists from the Health Boards in Wales
- Patient Quality and Safety Delivery Group representative
- Chief Pharmacist representative
- Prescribing Advisors
2)MIOG Work Programme
Agreed for 2015 / Achieved in 2015 / Future (2016/17)1.Ensure healthcare professionals have the appropriate skills and training to be competent in searching, analysing and interpreting the various information resources available to them, in whichever location they may be practising e.g. ward, clinic, dispensary, on-call, to help ensure both the proactive and reactive provision of high quality evidence-based information and advice on medicine use, to help optimise patient care and contain costs.
- Utilise PhD and UKMi papers to support involvement of MI in 24/7 working.
- Continue roll out of MiDatabank to Clinical Pharmacists and on call pharmacists to support 24/7 working.
Extent of roll-out varies between Health Boards – with some full implementation, some partial and no progress in others / Implications of findings of this for Wales to be considered.

- Diploma Study Days – MI Diploma study days will be held in the 3 locations in Wales.
MSc Course Director will attend MIOG meeting to provide tutor training. / MSc Course Director attended MIOG meeting to provide feedback training and to discuss issues around core enquiries and written assignment / MSc Course Director to be invited to attend MIOG meetings when appropriate.
- Pre-reg Training sessions – Feedback from this session will be reviewed and the 2015 study day material amended accordingly.
- UKMi/CPPE e-learning package ‘Answering medicines-related questions in practice’ – Package to be promoted to all potential users in Wales.
Optimal use of Medicines Learning Portal for Pharmacy in Wales to be considered.
- ‘NHS Wales Informatics Service’ eLibrary Group – Undertake a trial of resources submitted for consideration in the reprocurement of the medicines database.
Organise training on Micromedex at various locations throughout Wales.
- eBNF – One member will prepare the research protocol for a qualitative study to investigate barriers and enablers to use of the eBNF. Completion of the study will be subject to MIOG being able to secure appropriate funding.
- Support non-medical prescribers – Continue to provide input to courses.
BNF – errors in paper copies of BNF 70 and BNF-C 2015-16 – collated errors noted in these publications for sharing with UKMi, NPPG, BNF and NICE. Shared actions taken to minimise risk. / Support Health Boards with the implementation of Patient Safety Notice – PSN031.
PresQIPP – review of this resource undertaken highlighting value to MI pharmacists.
Welsh language patient information leaflets – available formal and informal leaflets collated and hosted on WMIC website / Continue to collate and make available Welsh language patient information leaflets
2. Ensure that MI service provision adapts to, is responsive to and reflects the NHS structure.
- Common Ailments Scheme – Present updated version to AWMSG for approval.
- Resource mapping – Review MI data at MIOG meeting.
- To consider the implications of the Specialist Pharmacy Services (SPS) review in England for Wales.
To consider the value of All-Wales Pharmacy services working more closely together on selected issues as per SPS England.
To ensure current users of NICE Evidence and UKMi websites in Wales are familiar with the SPS website (shortly to be launched).
- Consider how MI could support 7 day service provision.
- Consider the quality assurance of information service provided other than from MI centres
Consider the relevance to and implications of the Lord Carter of Coles report for MI in Wales
Discussed experience of pharmacists working with GP OOH service in ABMU and the MI implications / Continue to consider the potential for MI support to pharmacists and others working in the GP OOH service and subsequently NHS 111
Developed an All-Wales SOP for the provision of support by WMIC to local MI centres / Monitor implementation of All-Wales SOP for the provision of support by WMIC to local MI centres.
Encourage local MI centres in Wales to participate in the MiDatabank enquiry sharing project to reduce duplication of effort.
- Promote awareness of the MI service
Consider opportunities to engage with and market MI services across Wales to organisations such as NPIS, Patient Safety Wales, MSO network and YCC Wales.
3. MI staff are in an excellent position to be able to contribute to the improvement of patient safety.
- Yellow Cards – all MI centres to be encouraged to submit yellow cards from MiDatabank and to support the Yellow Card champions
Support the work of the Yellow Card champions in hospitals and primary care.
Provide support to proposed MSc in this area
- To work with the technical services pharmacists to ensure Wales’ allocated monographs for the Injectable Medicines Guide (Medusa)are submitted in a timely manner.
- Patient medicines helplines – Continue to share good practice in the provision of MI support to patient medicines helplines.
Incident Reporting in Medicines Information Scheme (IRMIS) – quarterly reports continue to be discussed at MIOG meetings. These reports can be used locally for education and training purposes. / IRMIS quarterly reports will continue to be discussed at MIOG meetings.
MIOG to be kept informed about UKMi patient safety initiatives and to contribute where appropriate.
4. The MI service in Wales can demonstrate the quality and utilisation of the service but not patient outcome. The MI service in Wales has recently contributed to a UK-wide Patient Outcomes Research Project.
- UK Patient Outcome Project – Analyse Welsh results
- All Wales R&D Project – All MI centres to be involved in the study.
Provide support to proposed MSc in area of yellow card reporting
5. Ensure that all population and individual medication selection decisions are made with access to the best quality information.
- IPFR – MIOG will support the work of AWTTC in implementing the recommendations of the All Wales Review.
- Formulary appraisals – Consider use of WMIC website to share appraisals.
- Drug shortages –All Wales SOP for handling Drug Shortages to be reviewed,

- Review the UK and Wales analysis of KPI data.
Shared experiences of making RPS Faculty submissions / Continue to share experiences and support MI pharmacists making RPS Faculty submissions
RASP – MI pharmacists have developed and implemented a system to support this service handle medicines-related enquiries / Complete – not to be carried forward
Consider role of MI pharmacists in the development of drug libraries for SMART infusion pumps
