MINUTES SCC Meeting – Clara Hughes P.S.

JANUARY 11, 2016

  1. In Attendance:
  • Sue Simeson, Barb Speed,Lauren Beyger, Barb Skinner, Sadie Patry, Leslie Lang, Jen Wisdom, Maureen
  1. Welcome – Vice-Chair:
  • Barb Skinner, Vice-Chair opened the meeting
  1. Principal’s Report:
  • Review of DDSB Elementary School – Regular School Year – 2016-2017 Calendar
  • Staff and SCC members review and give Sue input on the Calendar with respect to Board Holidays, Professional Activity Days over the course of the year
  • Jen suggested potential conflict over the “Placement of December holiday” and parental work commitments at that time of year
  • Sue will note this concern and forward to the Board
  • FDK registrations are in progress; pass registration info along to any families in the area with FDK aged children
  • The next Family Friday will be on Friday January 29th
  • Parents are becoming involved
  • School is providing money for a parent to make and talk about healthy snacks
  • DDSB and YWCA are holding “Parent and Child Mother Goose” for ages 0-12 months at the school
  • Program will runs Wednesday February 3, 10, 17 & 24 from 1:30 to 2:30
  • Aimed at engaging babies and parents with songs, literacy
  • In June, there will also be a program for children entering FDK
  • Children attend at the school for programs as a stepping stone for FDK
  • Winter Clubs at Clara Hughes will be starting the week of January 25th
  • Run by the Leadership Program grade 7&8 students
  • The student create the club and write the teacher a letter requesting teacher supervision for the club
  • Students will have incentive to come out and participate by earning tickets, WRITS tickets
  • Winter Clubs are Technology Club, Debate Team, Girls Club, Sports Club, Indoor Games, Hockey, Just Dance, Book Club and Drama Club
  1. Vice-Principal’s Report:
  • Barb discussed the “2016 School Climate Survey” from the Board dealing with the topic of bullying in schools
  • Board collects all data for the school to analyze
  • There is a link for Staff Survey, Parent Survey and Student Survey
  • Barb had laptops set up for any SCC members to complete the Parent survey at the end of the meeting (Barb Skinner, Sadie, Maureen completed)
  • Barb emailed Leslie the link to the Parent Survey to complete at home; Leslie emailed the link to Heather Rockbrune, Lindsay Benson and Jen Wisdom
  • The “Regional SCC Meeting” will be held on January 19, 2016 at 7:00pm at the Board Education Centre
  • Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Stuart Shanker and he will talk about “Self-Regulation: the Role of the Parent”
  • At the end of the presentation, there will be an Area Networking Session with the Parent Involvement Committee
  • Any parent or SCC member is invited to attend
  1. Teacher Representative Report – Lauren Beyger:
  • The Primary Holiday Basket Raffles were a huge success and raised approximately $1,000 +/-
  • The Primary Division will use the funds for a potential author visit
  • There were no new teacher Wish List requests up for discussion but Lauren will communicate with staff for any submissions
  • Staff will likely request the $5.00 per student for future programs (i.e. Scientist in the School etc.)
  1. Fundraising:
  • Discussion about the spring fundraising campaign
  • Will SCC carry on with Kernels Popcorn Fundraiser
  • Explore other fundraisers i.e. Pepperoni Sticks, Cookie Dough, Pizza Kits etc.
  • Ask around to see what other schools or team are doing for their fundraising endeavours
  • We will discuss the spring fundraiser at the next meeting

  1. New Business:
  • Maureen discussed issues in a report that she read about Clara Hughes PS being identified as a ‘priority school’
  • General group discussion about this and our current Breakfast Program, Dental Screening and Vision Care provided to the school
