CCSDS Plenary

  • The WG attended the CCSDS plenary.

MOIMS Plenary

  • The WG attended the MOIMS plenary.
  • MOIMS plenary will be on Friday at 11:00.

SM&C WG Plenary

  • MM presented the agreed agenda, the status and the objectives for the SM&C WG [A01], [A02].

Green Book Proposed Changes

  • The WG went through the proposed example changes.
  • Definition of Framework: members are invited to comment on it.
  • One issue that was discussed is that sometime the GB results too abstract and difficult to understand to people that have not been involved with SM&C. A fresh look at the document would be beneficial.

Action 091026-01ALL Agencies to pass the current draft issue of the GB to an expert without previous SM&C experience to validate the general understanding of the document. Due 30 Nov 09.

26-Oct-09 PM

Green Book Proposed Changes (continue)

  • Orchestration of services: SC will improve the text that will show the relationship of SLE with SM&C through mission-specific examples.

Action 091026-02BB/MM to provide SC with a mission-specific example to show the relationship between SM&C and other CCSDS standards, in particular SLE. Due 30 Nov 09.

  • Location: Some discussion took place on the opportunity for a service (e.g. Orbit Data Service) to deliver an orbit object or an orbit file. It was agreed to take the simplest approach which is deliver an orbit file. The text will be updated accordingly. According to SC and EP, the transfer of files does not have implication on the MAL. It was agreed that the GB should include some examples that cover file transfer.

Action 091026-03SC/EP to include examples in the GB that cover file transfer. Due 30 Nov 09.

Preparation for Joint Meeting with Super BOF

MM and SC made a dry run of their respective presentations [A03], [A04]and incorporated inputs from the WG.

27-Oct-09 AM

Super BOF

  • A restricted SM&C group (BB, MM, PM, SC) attended the Super BOF meeting.
  • MM and SC delivered their respective presentations [A03], [A04]
  • See dedicated MoM [A05].

27-Oct-09 PM

Joint Meeting SM&C-MIA

  • RG delivered the MIA presentation [A06].
  • MIA GB is almost ready. Next step is to produce a MB that defines which existing standards are to be used for space.
  • MM delivered the SM&C presentation [A07]
  • The outcome of the meeting was very positive and the 2 WGs clearlyidentified the usefulness of the cooperation. In particular, the problem of MIA to remotely monitor and control a video camera (actually at least 3 components were identified requiring M&C: the camera, the pan-tilt device and the encoder) could certainly be addressed using the MO services. It will have to be analysed whether this implies the use of the M&C service or if a dedicated new Video Service should be identified in the suite of MO Services as specialisation of the M&C service.
  • It was also concluded that Video could be an excellent “first on-board user” of MO services considering the reduced risk involved in the operations of a video camera.
  • RG asked about prototyping opportunities: LM said that it might be possible to set up a prototype testbed between JSC and MSFC.

Action 091027-01LM to investigate opportunities to prototype a MO Video Service between JSC and MSFC. Due 31 Jan 10.

Action 091027-02R. Grubbs to define use cases for the MO Video Service. Due 30 Nov 09.

Preparation for Joint Meeting with PUS BOF

  • The presentation by BB was discussed and reviewed [A19].

28-Oct-09 AM

JSC-DLR prototype (SL)

  • SL delivered the presentation [A08].
  • Good progress has been made and SL is convinced that this is the way to go for interoperability.
  • A C++ Language API MB will be produced by DLR and NASA (as long as funds are available).
  • So far no RIDs on the MAL have been identified.

Action 091028-01LM and S. Gully to define a date by when the first draft of the C++ Language API MB. Due 28 Feb 10.

  • The prototype will generate a report that will be put in a format compatible with the report that is currently being drafted by the SM&C WG.

Action 091028-02SC to provide a copy of the draft MO Prototype Report to SL and SG as an example for the JSC-DLR prototype report. Due 30 Nov 09.

ESA-CNES prototype (SC/EP/DF)

  • The work is progressing well: the testbed is ready, the test specification is finished and the test is being carried out with a planned completion date end of Feb 2010. Some editorial RIDs on the MAL have been raised and will be taken into account in the on-going MAL review.
  • A wiki-based tool (Fitness) has been used to define the tests and to produce the test report. The tool, once properly configured, runs the test automatically.
  • The implementation of all tests will be completed by the end of the year. The run of the final interoperability test is planned by end of Feb 2010.
  • The intention is to produce a testbed for the certification of any future MAL/Services implementations.
  • Performance of the MO services will be critical for their actual usage. Based on this, it was agreed that performance figures should also be collected while performing the prototype testing.

Action 091028-03SC/EP/DF to identify ways of collecting performance figures while prototype testing. Due 28Feb 10.

MO M&C over Space Packets prototype (DF)

  • The work is progressing well. An update of the book is planned by Feb 2010 using the feedbacks coming from the prototype.
  • DF delivered the presentation [A09].
  • The encoding used for SP is generic enough and could be re-used for any other transport that would require an efficient use of the bandwidth.

Action 091028-04ALL to identify the second Agency that will support the prototype of the Space Packet binding with CNES. Due 31 Dec 09.

XTCE Status

  • MM delivered the presentation by Kevin Rice [A10].
  • DS explained that there is consensus in the US for use of XTCE both at agency and industrial levels.

Action 091028-05D. Smithto distribute the GOVSAT XTCE files to the SM&C WG provided it goes through export control. Due 1Dec 09.

Action 091028-06K. Ricetomake available the 2 MBs and the XTCE 1.2 for internal review. Due 30 Nov 09.

28-Oct-09 PM

GMSEC

  • DS delivered the presentation [A11].
  • After discussion, it was agreed that SM&C should look into the equivalent GMSEC Common and M&C specifications and GMSEC in the way to harmonise with SM&C. The following actions were agreed:

Action 091028-07D. Smithtomake available the GMSEC Common and M&C specifications. Due 30 Nov 09.

Action 091028-08D. Smith and LM to investigate means to analyse GMSEC and SM&C for commonality and to report by the next CCSDS workshop. CCSDS WS spring 10.

Use of Commercial SOA Frameworks

  • MeS delivered the presentation [A12].
  • SJ delivered the presentation [A13].
  • After an extra-large discussion, it was concluded that
  1. MeS asked for a compromise to be able to map directly (i.e. not via MAL) from the service specifications to a technology of his choice, in particular a commercial SOA framework. The WG pointed out that this is currently supported by the MO concept, however this is may not be clear in the GB. Additionally, the mapping may not be cover 100% of the MAL specification, which implies that interoperability may be limited.

Action 091028-09SC to check if the GB describes that it is possible to map directly from the service specifications to a technology of his choice. Due 31Dec 09.

  1. MeS was concerned that direct mapping would result in implementations that are not MO compliant. The WG stated that one implementation could be MO compliant by implementing the services at application layer, even bypassing the MAL. In this case the MAL acts as a service description/behaviour language that needs to be used to configure the direct mapping.
  2. MeS was concerned that the SM&C WG has defined its own service notation rather than using an industry standard. The WG responded that there are 2 reasons for this: a) industry standards are moving targets and b) the current set of industry standards (e.g. WSDL, IDL) does not support the IPs and the bindings that are currently required and foreseen by MO.
  3. MeS was concerned that the use of the MAL precludes the use of the entire support infrastructure that COTS SOA frameworks provide. SJ replied that this is not the case however the discussion was not conclusive and additional inputs to MeS are is still required.

Action 091028-10SJ to provide a concrete example of a simple MO service mapped to a COTS SOA framework and discuss it with M. Sarkarati and the WG. Due 31Dec 09.

29-Oct-09 AM

Joint SM&C-NAV Meeting

  • RT delivered the presentation [A14].
  • The problem of the current overlap on Tracking Data service between CSS and SM&C was re-iterated. It was also mentioned that the SM&C WG recommendation to the Super BOF was to leave the final decision on where to locate that service to the experts, i.e. to the NAV WG.
  • The NAV WG stated that their work so far was limited to the definition of the exchanged data, but that they are open and agreeable to support also the definition of the relative services
  • It was agreed that the services to be defined shall focus on the data that has been defined (and are planned) by the NAV WG, i.e. ODM, ADM, TDM, event prediction, pointing, etc.

Action 091029-01MD/SJ to draft a short proposal for the definition of one service around one data type already defined by NAV, e.g. ODM. Due 15 Dec 09.

29-Oct-09 PM

Joint SM&C-SOIS-PUS Meeting

  • SV delivered the presentations and the draft PUS WG Charter [A15, A16, A17] and debriefed about the outcome of the 1st PUS BOF meeting in the morning.
  • CT delivered the presentation [A18].
  • BB delivered the presentation [A19].
  • It was agree that
  1. Short term objective is:
  2. to update the ECSS PUS taking on-board the lesson learned changes and to keep backward compatibility with on-board developments and with the other standards with which the ECSS PUS is compatible with now.
  3. to publish this as the CCSDS PUS.
  4. Final objective is to define a new consistent set of CCSDS standards that encompass SM&C, PUS and other relevant CCSDS standards and defines exactly the MO functionality independently from the transport protocol.
  5. It is proposed to achieve the first objective by a CCSDS PUS WG. The second objective will be achieved in a joint activity between the SM&C WG and the PUS WG.

30-Oct-09 AM

Wrap-up and Preparation of reporting to MOIMS/CESG

  • The WG prepared the reporting to MOIMS/CESG [A20] including the meeting attendance statistics [A21].

MOIMS Plenary

  • The MM attended the MOIMS plenary where he delivered the presentation [A20].
