Chair Opening

Chris Zeller welcomed everyone and opened the council meeting at approximately 18:20. This meeting will focus on the planning for the Honors and Awards banquet and planning for the next Professional Development Seminar.

Honors and Awards

Rusty Powell reported the banquet is scheduled for 30 April at the Sprinhill Suites in downtown Denver (http://www.springhillsuitesdenver.com/). Planning for 80-100 attendees. The council discussed the cost for attending to achieve a balance of encouraging participation, but not subsidizing to the point of losing a lot of money. Taylor Lilly proposed charging consistent with last year: student at $20, member at $30, non-member at $35. Sue Janssen seconded. All were in favor with the exception of Chris Zeller who abstained. Request for nominations for Engineer of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year, and Educator of the Year has been sent to membership. Rusty is coordinating the selection committee. The invitation will be sent soon. Paul Andersen will help advertise at Lockheed Martin and Sue Janssen will spread the word at ULA and MARS (the LM and ULA retirement association).

Section awards are due to headquarters by 30 June. (The annual report is 1 June.) This year we will submit the forms for all the awards. We think we have a good chance for the best Young Professional Activity (indoor skydiving), Public Policy (CAD and CVD), Outreach (science fair, Mars Rover workshop, TSA, etc), and even Communication (website, email, newsletter). Sue will send the forms to the committee chairs and will also begin the draft for the annual report/best section award.

Professional Development Seminar

Jeremiah Schneider is planning the second PD seminar on SMAD (Space Mission Analysis and Design). It will be on 9 May at the Colorado School of Mines. Jeremiah shared the presentation below:

The focus of the seminar is on what is changed between the old and new SMAD. Some sections may be skipped in the interest of time. If the entire SMAD were discussed it would be a week-long course.

Brian Gulliver asked if we could provide certificates to participants – these could be submitted to continuing education credits for Professional Engineers.

Chris Zeller asked if we should have the SMAD book available for purchase at the seminar. It can be ordered from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Space-Mission-Engineering-Technology-Library/dp/1881883159. Others suggested that participants order their own copy.

We are planning for 50 participants. The fee for the seminar is $20 for AIAA members and $30 for members. CSM is providing the classroom free of charge. The fee covers breakfast and lunch and repro costs. Taylor Lilly suggested using UCCS for repro because it is much cheaper than places such as Kinkos.

Jeremiah will coordinate the registration and payment through the website with John Grace and Brian Gulliver.

Elections

Sue Janssen sent a request for nominations for council officers. Brian Gulliver is interested in the Chair-elect position. Roger McNamara will continue as Treasurer. Sue will step down as Secretary so a candidate is needed.

ATS

Paul Andersen is meeting with the Dean of Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines to negotiate the cost of the facility.

STEM Outreach

Chris Zeller asked if Mike Shallenberger had submitted his proposal for the STEM Academy project. Sue will send a reminder to Mike immediately. Chris has approval to “repurpose” the Cat III funds for the Mars Rover Capstone event to a similar activity.

Chris also mentioned that he is returning the telescope that was purchased as a science fair prize, but received too late.

Sue Janssen summarized other outreach activities:

·  Mike Stoellinger and other volunteer judges awarded the AIAA RM Prizes at the Wyoming Science fair on Mar 1:

o  Senior Division:

§  Sierra Spears, "Comparing Impact Crater Frequency and Eccentricity"

§  Landen Fuller, "Fuel Cells For Our Future - Microbial or Hydrogen"

o  Junior Division:

§  Jack Rellstab, "Dented Dynamics"

§  Mary MacGuire, "Terraforming the Martian Envronment with Extremophiles"

·  John Eiler has recruited the judges for the Colorado Science fair on 9 April. Prizes have been ordered by Sue. John will support the award ceremony.

·  COTSA

o  Sue Janssen had an AIAA RM table at the Colorado Technical Student Association (http://www.cotsa.cccs.edu/) conference on 20 February. She talked with many educators, parents and students about membership, local activities and educator resources. She handed out MANY stickers.

o  James Buckley (RM member) volunteered to judge the flight competitions at the TSA conference. Here is a photo of the judges speaking with a few competitors.

§  Flight – Middle School

§  First Place: Laura Niichel - Pleasant View Middle School

§  Second Place: Aryanna Gallegos - Pleasant View Middle School

§  Third Place: Logan Dailey - Goddard Middle School

§  Flight Endurance – High School

§  First Place: Madisen Purfoy Frie - The STEM High School and Academy

§  Second Place: Garrett Howard - The STEM High School and Academy

§  Third Place: Ben Law - The STEM High School and Academy

o  Tony Raymond, the Colorado TSA State Director asked Sue if AIAA RM would be interested in running the Flight competitions at the conference next year. The council agreed that we should consider this. Sue will get the information.

·  Sue shared as story about AIAA RM helping a student make connections with professionals. The winner of the Colorado 2014 AIAA prize asked Sue for help in finding a wind tunnel for testing his 2015 science project. This month, he was able to test at the USAFA! Kudos go to Stuart Marlatt of ULA who mentored the student and to Tim Jung of the USAFA. Here is a note from the student:

Subject: Science Fair

I just wanted to thank you for all of your help with my science fair. Yesterday at regional science fair I won first place in senior division and I was selected to go to state at Colorado State University. Because of the position that I placed I was also the only one to be selected to go and compete at Internationals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am really excited to go to the competitions. I will keep you posted on how I do at each of the competitions. Thank you for all of your help.

Trevor

Chris asked Rusty if we could write an article about this “success story” (if would need approval from USAFA) to put in the Aerospace America or the e-newsletter.

Webmaster

John Grace was unable to attend the meeting but submitted the following written report:

·  General

o  Thanks to Council Officers that add Announcements and Calendar entries!

·  Support

o  Activated 2 email lists: awards and nominations

o  Registration for the Kepler K2 was 43

o  Registration for the USAFA Astro Lab was 25

o  Registration for AIAA Movie Night is 45 (as of 3/15)

·  Updated the AIAA-RM email list () on March 12.

o  AIAA-RM now has 1154 email addresses (same as February 3).

Northern Vice Chair

Donna Gerren was unable to attend the meeting but submitted the following written report:

·  AIAA partnered with NASA on the NASA/NACA 100th Year Celebration that was held on March 3 at the National Air and Space Museum:

o  The NACA Centenary: A Symposium on 100 Years of Aerospace Research and Development

§  Tuesday, March 3 – Wednesday, March 4, 2015

§  Moving Beyond Earth Gallery
National Air and Space Museum (NASM), Independence Avenue, Washington DC

o  The Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department at CU Boulder supported the event to the extent that they were issued two invitations to the symposium and the banquet, one of the invitees being myself. While the symposium on the history and accomplishments of NACA was well-worth attending, the banquet, with multiple speakers scheduled, never acknowledged sponsors by name (except Lockheed Martin), nor gave an opportunity for sponsors to exhibit at a booth or table or mingle with sponsor name tags. The overall impression of CU was that the event wasn’t worth the sponsorship expense to the department.

·  Tuesday, March 10th, Maj. Gen. Jay Lindell, of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, presented a talk on the value the aerospace industry has created for the Colorado economy and how Colorado is the epicenter for our nation’s future space capability.

o  It was a very different talk from our usual venue of engineers and scientists from various companies, but it was very interesting to see aerospace engineering from an economic and political perspective, especially as it directly impacts Colorado.

o  The turnout was very good; the audience consisted of quite a few engineering students besides just from the aerospace department. A flyer of the meeting is below.

·  The next CU AIAA speaker, Jeff Osterkamp, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th. Jeff is the VP of Ball's engineering department. He will discuss Ball and its current involvement in the space program.

Adjournment

Chris adjourned the meeting at approximately 20:20. The next council meeting is scheduled for 15 April in conjunction with the National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs (http://www.spacesymposium.org/). Paul Andersen and Roger McNamara will arrange a meeting room as well as passes for those who wish to see the exhibits.

Respectfully submitted,

Sue Janssen

Secretary, AIAA RMS
