Minutes of the November 5, 2012 Executive Committee Meeting

In Attendance:

A quorum was present.

In attendance were:Ingrid Friesen, James Ellis, James Baley, Eileen McMinn, Brad Stark, Doug Tate, Jackie Grant, Jason Peltz, Pat Patton, Tikkun Gottschalk, Lynne Davis, and Bar Administrator Lisa-Gaye Hall.

Minutes:

Minutes of the October Meeting were reviewed. James Ellis moved that the minutes be accepted. James Baley seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:

James Baley presented report. We are receiving money since we invoiced early and getting check in. James will be moving money from checking to money market account. Passed unanimously.

Committee Reports:

Finance Committee:

James Baley-For 2nd month the meeting was cancelled. Primary issue on agenda with YLD integration. James announced that he met with Lynne Davis and Meghann Burke who later met with Ingrid. Next Finance committee meeting is Tuesday November 27th at 8:30am.

CLE Committee:

Brad Stark-Thanks to L.G. for nailing down the view from the bench this Friday. 38 ppl are signed up. Now Judge Dray will be presenting on Friday instead of Judge Ward Scott for the view from the bench. L.G. asked for volunteers to help with the CLE this Friday and they are supposed to call her to make plans. The CLE will last at 12-2, lunch will be provided for $10.

3 other CLEs- 1.Immigration shooting for April 19-26th.Marionwill be running the Immgiration CLE.2. A general Bankruptcy CLE shooting for Feb 22 or March 1st. The Committee is looking at Ben Pitts or Hilliard to present. 3. A Technology CLE with possible dates of Jan 18 or 25th. The CLE Committee has had some discussion about turning this into a broader topic about running a small office. However, nothing is final with the technology CLE.

Communications Committee:

Eileen McMinn-Nothing new to report. Bar Briefs in process and will be coming soon.

Special Events:

James Ellis-We made good progress on making money for the Christmas party. We received $4950 which was more than we had anticipated. Everyone did their part and we were very successful.

Pro Bono Committee:

Tikkun Gottschalk-There were some good pro bono committee and Pisgah Legal events that were organized by Ky Delaney recently. One event was at Packs Tavern honoring MAVL volunteers. There was also a CLE in Brevard on ethics that was free to MAVL volunteers. There were 15 attorneys that showed up. The Pisgah phone a thon is on the horizon. Tikkun asked for volunteers from the committee to work the phone a thon.

Nominating Committee:

Doug Tate-TheCommittee is supposed to have slate in February. There is a preliminary list now.

YLD:

Meghann Burke and Lynne Davis met with James Baley and later with Ingrid regarding YLD integration. YLD will sending out a comment period to its members and then get a proposal to James Baley by the next finance committee meeting. Lynne Davis will present it to the EC meeting.

Mentoring Program:

Doug Tate-The kickoff was a few weeks ago at Packs Tavern. It went very well and was well attended. Bill Christy was there to speak to the mentors/mentees. Patsy Brison also spoke to the attendees. There are 12 pairs and 3 extras mentors.

New Business:

Public Defender- everyone responded with everyone voting in favor of accepting Ingrid’s draft language outlining the process for voting on the Public Defender position. Ingrid sent the proposed language in to the Indigent Defense office for their review. We should be ready for election in January.

Christmas Party raffle for Habitat for Humanity- we will have a raffle for a donated ipod, ipad. L.G. will get the raffle started and bring it out at the next bar lunch. Everyone thinks an iPad would be best. Ingrid thought of making raffle ticket $10. Tikkun suggested a step up approach for 1 for $10 or 3 for $20. We can accept credit card payments for the raffle. Ingrid will get easels and pictures of habitat projects to promote the raffle. Hopefully we’ll have tickets by Monday. Ingird asked if it was in non-dues. James Baley said we’d cut a check straight to Habitat for the credit card payments.

The next regular EC meeting will be on December 3, 2012 at 12:30 in the Pisgah Legal Services conference room.
