Minutes of the Board of Directors for August 7, 2014

In attendance:Nancy Anderson, Sgt. Chris Adams, Lt. Joe Binns, Captain Bud Davenport, Amaka Flynn, Claude Jenkins, Jaan Layman, Sgt. Mike McIver, Rob Smith, Chief Brandon Zuidema, Sgt. Scott Selvek, and Christina Pappas

The meeting was called to order at 6:01 pm by President Bud Davenport. The Board had a quorum present.

The following items were discussed:

1)Sgt. Scott Selvek and Det. Pappas were in attendance to ask about the vision and direction of the Garner PAAL program. It was agreed upon that a Retreat is needed soon to further discuss the long range plans and goals for PAAL.

2)Treasure’s Report: Insurance was paid ($2022.74). National Conference expenses were $1506.01. John Adams should have taxes processed and the return by next month. PAAL received $3000 from the Town of Garner.

3)Program reports:

  • All of the programs are either breaking for summer or just returned from track-out.
  • Creech Road – Sgt. McIver and the Traffic Safety Unit are looking to start up a program at Creech Road. There seems to be a definite need there for PAAL.
  • Garner Magnet High School – Due to Drew Cook leaving, this program will be put on hold right now. It will be readdressed when a new principal is hired.

4)The Program Committee has discussedsome ideas to get community members involved to assist with the curriculum for the programs. Back to School Bash is right around the corner (August 23rd). Volunteers are needed (games, supply station, feeding the kids).

5)A picture of the PAAL ornament was passed around. 200 ornaments were purchased at a total cost of $1795. They are currently in the production stage. Each ornament box will contain a card explaining the significance of the ornament. Anticipated delivery is the week of September 15th. Ornaments will be sold for $20 each.

6)Youth Thrive: Mike received the lesson plan books for free due to an error with the printing. The training is scheduled for September 30 (9a-1p) @ the United Way in Morrisville, October 6 (9a-5p) on Main Street, and October 14 (9a-5p) in Morrisville.

7)Moonrunners Golf Tournament (September 3): They would like to build a partnership with PAAL. PAAL is the sole recipient of the money raised from this tournament. They are looking for additional sponsors.

8)National PAL Conference: Jason Jones went with Mike. They learned a lot about the boxing programs around the country. They may propose a wrestling program. Our fundraising efforts are on par or exceed what many others around the country are doing. A “fake warrant” idea was discussed, where the “arrestee” would have to raise money to get released. Safety was a hot topic at the Conference (“Don’t lose a kid!”). Not having a facility is an obvious hindrance to us in Garner. Healthy eating/living for the kids should be emphasized. There are other programs of interest out there, such as Chess League, a Science/Math Program, etc. MLB, NFL, USA Boxing, and others are PAL sponsors nationally!

The next meeting of the Board of Directors for the Garner PAAL Board will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014at 6:00 p.m. at the Garner Chamber of Commerce. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m.
