Minutes of NYSFAAA Region VIII Meeting

September 22nd, 2016

St. Lawrence University- Eben Holden North Room

Minutes: Stacey Hawkins provided the minutes from the last meeting which was held on May 12th, 2016. The meeting minutes were reviewed. Carolyn Corcoran requested that under the Treasurer’s report that the workd Axillary is changed to Auxiliary. A motion was made by Todd Moravec to accept the minutes, seconded by Mary Ellen Chamberlain. Stacey has sent a request to Lea Nuwer asking that the May 12th region meeting minutes be removed so she can make the appropriate changes and repost.

Treasurer’s Report: Susan Godreau provided a report to Carolyn Corcoran to deliver at the meeting. The last report was given on 2/26/16. The beginning balance is $3657.49. Activity since the last meeting consists of a $375 .00 payment for the region lunch on 2/26/16 and a receipt of $250.00 for the June revenue sharing. The ending balance is $3532.49.

HESC Update: No HESC Update. There was a concern brought up from the group that there were issues with the IVP process and it had students showing the max tap amount who should have only received the minimum amount. Changes should have occurred around September 2nd and a few members had brought the concern to HESC and they had noted and were adjusting it.

Membership Update: Pat Farmer provided the membership update. At this time we have 51 total members and membership can be reviewed online.

Executive Council Update:

Todd Moravec provided an update

·  The remote meeting was held on August 17th.

·  Kerrie Cooper’s term as President will be up this October.

·  New NYSFAAA President will be Darrin Rooker from New York Chiropractic College.

·  Todd’s term as Exec. Council Rep will be up October 2017.

·  Change in the Council’s structure- TICC used to report to the secretary but will now report to Howard who is the 2nd Vice President.

·  A paired down version of the NYSFAAA goals and objectives were voted on and approved. Each goal was discussed within the group to see what is being done and where we as a region can improve. The goals and objectives for 2016-2017 are attached to this document.

o  Patrick Zeigler volunteered his services to the group in order to get more outreach and advocacy within the government relations area from the group. He is active in the NJ region which has a much higher participation when discussing advocacy. He is happy to assist wherever he can and to get the group in to speak with state representation but noted although he has the contacts to get the meetings set up he cannot discuss the issues due to his current positon therefore the region has to have members present and able to attend. Kerry Lubold suggested reaching out to retirees’ to help out with federal relations activities and committees.

o  Further discussion of the usage of the blog. The State committee is looking at the blog and listserv to see if this is an effective resource.

o  Todd was going to see about getting Patrick on the Executive Committee Agenda in order to provide an explanation of what is going on at the federal level.

o  Each committee is supposed to update and ensure the information pertaining to their area is up to date on the website.

o  The website will be getting a facelift.

o  Todd will send out an updated listing of Regional reps.

o  They are trying to get set up and going an investment committee.

o  February 1st is Advocacy day and we should encourage all members to take part in some form.

Old Business:

·  We are still missing committee members – attached is the most up to date listing of members.

·  The school counselor workshops will not happen within the region however we have asked and have been granted time (2 hours or so) within the school counselors regional meeting to provide them with the information typically gone over during the workshops. The main focus will be providing guidance using 2015 info. The school counselor group does have 2 meeting sites and we are waiting to hear when and where.

·  Support Staff workshop? Region members are asked to speak with the support staff to see if there is interest and the timing of the event along with possible topics. Discussion of April or May timeframe and held at the VIC as they have a lot of possible activities. Topics such as customer service and handling difficult people.

·  There are still cookbooks available for 10.00 each

New Business:

·  Clarkson University is not going to participate in College Goal NY however is happy to pair with SUNY FA Day to assist if needed. SUNY Plattsburgh & SUNY Canton will hold events as part of SUNY FA DAY.

·  November 18th will be a statewide training event.

·  FA 101 for High School nights? Pat Farmer inquired as to if this has been done and the possibility of doing so as she had been approached by Northwood Prep.

·  NYS Shopping sheet- Dissuasion of what each school does in order to fulfil requirements.

·  Higher Ed Night will be held Tuesday October 4th with the fair from 6-8:30 at SLU.

·  Discussion regarding if schools will be sending award notices earlier.

·  Questions regarding work-study wage allowance at each University discussed.

·  Pat will be picking up the region basket for the conference

·  Carolyn is leaving her position as region rep. Todd has volunteered and there were no objections to him as the new region rep.

Next Meeting: Tentatively scheduled for November 18th at SUNY Plattsburgh. This will also be a statewide training day in which we will conclude with a working lunch meeting. Topics to be discussed are: Interest in attending Legislation Day and support staff workshop.
