2000:2-4 / REPORTS FROM THE NATIONAL IAI FORUMS
Denmark: / IAI Forum Denmark had a booth at the Danish Tradeshow Teknik & Data in Odense 9 – 11 February 2000. The tradeshow had 11.800 visitors. Graphisoft, Nemetschek, Autodesk, SOFiSTiK and CSTB demonstrated IFC compatible software at the IAI booth. The booth was very well attended. A seminar was held in conjunction with Teknik & Data where IAI Forum Denmark together with representatives from the software companies gave a lecture on IFC.
Jan Karlshøj and Poul Sorgenfri Ottosen had a meeting with representatives from the Department of Housing regarding the use of IFC. Jan Karlshøj was interviewed about IAI for an article 15 March in Jyllands Posten, which is one of the major newspapers in Denmark.
Membership is stable around 35 members.
Finland: / Tekes approved the funding for IAI Forum Finland in 2000 on February 24th. It is based on a membership expectation of 55-60. The main activities will be:
-Juha Hyvärinen as IFC R3.0 International Project Manager
-Juha Hyvärinen and Kari Karstila as MSG members
-Jiri Hietanen as BLIS Technical Co-ordinator
Some Finnish companies are participating the BLIS work.
The Vera annual seminar will be focusing on e-business, but also some IFC implementations will be presented. The seminar will be arranged on April 11th.
Vera Steering Group will visit California in April 1st...9th. The visit will include discussions about co-operation with LBNL and CIFE. The group will also visit Walt Disney Imagineering and Cephren.
Norway: / The Norwegian Annual meeting will take place 29th march. At that meeting the Forum will show IFC communication between ArchiCAD and Architectural Desktop based on IFC files from Nemetschek.
A decision for the BARBI Application is expected in the near future. A positive decision will give the Norwegian IAI Forum a platform for expanding the work within the organisation.
Currently 12 members.
Sweden: / SIAI is from January 2000 once again an independent organisation, now co-operating with Svensk Byggtjänst for administrative and book keeping support.
The number of members is stable at 40 companies. Hopefully this new network and the implementations of IFC 2.0 increase the interest.
The Swedish research programme “IT Bygg och Fastighet 2002” is currently planning for the continuation of the IFC implementation project for the final 2.5 years of the program. It will hopefully be well funded including prototypes and pilots in real construction projects.
Coming activities around IFCs are:
- March 21 Nordbygg (a trade show in Stockholm) with demonstrations and seminars – Svensk Byggtjänst will present “Intelligent information i byggande och förvaltning”.
- March 23 & 24Nordbygg – Granlund, ABB and others demonstrate HVAC-solutions
- March 29 IFC introduction, a one day seminar for newcomers in Stockholm
- May 3“Intelligent information i Bygg- och förvaltningsprocesserna” – Information about a Demo building is exchanged between different actors and domains using XML and IFC. The Demonstrator from Svensk Byggtjänst is used.
- June 5 & 6 Nordic IAI workshop in Stockholm
- September 20 IT Bygg och Fastighet 2002 – the annual IT day – Forum 2000 with Richard See as one Key note speaker. (Perhaps his visit can be combined with other activities in the Nordic countries?)
2000:2-5 / REPORTS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS IN MELBOURNE
PSO, JKJ and AKI presented the IAI Melbourne meeting results. The official minutes have not been published yet. JKJ will send ITM minutes immediately on the FTP-site 2), but the IC minutes will be available in same later phase.
The next ITM meeting will be in Paris on June 20th and 21st 2000.
PSO described the protocol discussions and the forming of the standing protocol committee. The members are Patrick MacLeamy, Poul Ottosen and John Mitchell.
The other main results in IC from Nordic point of view were:
-As total the meeting was the best IAI Summit after Copenhagen and gave new hope for the future of IAI
-The new IC and ExCom Chair is David Gensler, AKI was elected to the Deputy Chair of IC and ExCom for one year. Otherwise ExCom will continue until London IC Summit (October 23rd...27th) with the same structure as before. There the new ExCom should be elected.
-Open IFC idea was approved and the model with all documentation will be published on the open website as soon as the copyright markings have been added to all the documents
-The email discussions before the meeting about the implementation demos was rather heated, but finally the implementation demos, both R1.5.1 and R2.0, were very good and showed the possibilities in use of IFCs
-Rasso Steinmann and Richard See formulated together a public statement of IFC implementation support, which was accepted by the IC
-The German Speaking Chapter's Audit Report problem was solved by a compromise proposed by Brian Zelly. Richard See promised to pay part of his telephone costs by buying one Chairman's Challenge share (US$ 3000). The conclusion was that nobody had made anything wrong, but too many issues in the IAI agreements has been left indeterminated and this had caused different interpretations of what was agreed. IBM will try to improve the contract documentation in the future
After the positive decisions in IC PSO promised that Nordic Chapter will buy one Chairman's Challenge share (US$ 3000) for R2.x work and pay US$ 12.000 as the international membership fee. This was the same total commitment (U$ 15.000) for 2000 which Nordic Chapter promised in the Munich Summit.
The IAI budget for 2000 will be in balance, if some Chapters can provide the additional funding which they in Melbourne hope to find. / 2) JKJ / 2) ASAP
2000:2-6 / REPORT FROM ITM TELECONS
There has not been any ITM telecons since the last Nordic Board meeting.
2000:2-7 / REPORT FROM EXCOM TELECONS
There has not been any ExCom telecons since the last Nordic Board meeting. AKI has asked by email the approval of ExCom for co-sponsorship to the 2nd Worldwide ECCE Symposium "Information and Communication Technology in the Practice of Building and Civil Engineering" in Finland on June 6th...8th 2001. The co-sponsorship does not mean any financial commitments, only that IAI name can be used in the marketing of the event. It was approved.
2000:2-8 / FINANCES
AKI presented the same Nordic budget as in the Copenhagen meeting. AKI will send the first invoices 50% of the annual fee to the Nordic Forums ASAP. The surplus will be used for Nordic co-operation as agreed in the future meetings.
2000:2-9 / OTHER ISSUES
Nordic IAI workshop in Stockholm in June 2000
The Swedish IAI Forum will organise a Nordic IFC workshop in Stockholm the first week in June 2000. The proposal now is 1.5 days, starting at 14:00 Monday June 5 and ending in the late afternoon the following day.
The preliminary agenda is to have the first afternoon for presentations of implementations in products or prototypes from all the Nordic countries (also other countries if there is interest). The presentations should focus on information content, process usage of information and added value to business. The evening should be reserved for a social event with possibilities for technical discussion if necessary. The second day will be a series of discussions on topics important for near future implementation and use - like classification, properties, geometry etc. These will be prepared with papers by selected persons involved in IFC work. After a discussion the presenter will have to report the result for the workshop documentation.
The location will be at a conference place on Lidingö, just outside Stockholm. For meeting space and hotel room the estimated fee is 1.500 SEK if everyone including presenters have to pay. The maximum attendance in the workshop could be 35 persons. (Denmark 5, Finland 10, Norway 5, Sweden 15). JKJ, PED, AKI and VTI will find out if there is enough interest for the workshop, due date May 2nd. 3)
