MINUTES FOR UTA RETIREES’ CLUB TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2013

The meeting was the Winter Luncheon held in the Bluebonnet Ballroom of the E. H. Hereford University Center. The luncheon was held between 11am and 1pm and was sponsored by the Office of Development. The program consisted of a panel discussion.

Frank Gault, president, welcomed everyone and introduced some of the University deans and administrative faculty/staff who were present. After eating, Frank introduced our three members of the panel discussion.

PROGRAM

The title of the panel discussion was “The Impact of Tax Law Changes on Your Estate and Financial Planning” Our three panelists were R. Barry Johnson, Judson D. Arrington and William C. Porterfield III. Each panelist spoke in turn with Mr. Johnson making the summary remarks.

Mr. R. Barry Johnson is a CPA with his own company and 35 years of experience. He opened the discussion by stating that there were two milestones that were relevant to today. The first was that Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1913 and many points of his presidential speech are still true today. The second milestone was that the 16th amendment established the federal income tax.

Mr. Judson D. Arrington is a graduate of Baylor and a Financial Planner. He talked about the yield of different investments. Don’t be lured by quick returns and if you take out funds, be sure to start with the monies that have already been taxed. At age 70.5 you have to start taking out funds from deferred accounts. Be aware of the laws so you are not forced to pay penalties.

Mr. William C. Porterfield III has been associated with UT-Southwestern, UT-Dallas and UT-Arlington. He is a Financial Planner with the Lincoln Financial Group. He urged all retirees to continue to participate in the financial opportunities offered by the University. He talked about the Bush cuts for estate planning. He urged everyone to have an up to date will and advanced directives (power of attorney, medical power of attorney, living will). He asked that anyone wanting a “will Kit” could leave their e-mail address on the sign-up sheet at the back of the room and he would provide a link to Dearborn National and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Closing remarks were made by Mr. R. Barry Johnson. Frank Gault thanked the participants and announced the lineup of Retirees’ Club meetings through June. Everyone was encouraged to attend future meetings and visit our web site.
