Minutes for GGSO meeting, 7/9/07
Budget
Heather presented budget for Jenn.
Francis is the new assistant treasurer. He will be able to submit PO's, be responsible for money, etc. along with Jenn.
We have $175 for food (less than last year)
We have $2100 for travel (more than last year)
Food pays for the beginning and end of year picnics. Travel goes towards conferences. The money can be moved around a little.
Money for travel to conferences where not presenting
Email Jenn () or Francis () by Fri, Sept 14th.
Need to be a member of GGSO - sign up in OASIS
Tell them which conference, where, how much money wanted (try to be frugal) and what for.
To save on registration costs can volunteer at GSA.
People sharing hotel at GSA (at least 8 going). Need one more hotel room, Peter Harries may have suggestions for somewhere nearby.
Brown Bag lunch
Informal, graduate student presentations. Probably tuesday or thursday 12-1.
Great opportunity to practise presentations and find out what other students are working on. Only open to other graduate students so no pressure.
Email Jenn if want to present.
CPR
Jenn's mum has kindly volunteered to teach this.
Classes Fri, Sept 28th and Mon Oct 1st.
Only 8 per class and first come first served so email Jenn asap if want to participate.
Cost of certification $5.
Voted to add $2 or $3 each to cost to buy Jenn's mum lunch to say thank you.
Only CPR, no first aid.
Mention to advisors as cheap and potentially very useful!

Jenn will work out details when she has time.
Julie is 1st aid certified and volunteered to help with organising and presentation.

Geology Club
Lisa Romero is GGSO/Geology Club liason.
1st meeting this wednesday, 12pm in the break room with free pizza.
Designing T-shirts and bumper stickers, design suggestions welcome.
Alumni Society
Works closely with GGSO and is a very active society.
They have a GAS endowment of $90 000.
Interest from this funds 2 awards - $1000 for Masters, $1500 for PhD.
Aiming to get $200 000 to fund a scholarship.
John Hall is stepping down as President, successor TBA.
Rockbreaker Sept 21st at Jerk Hut.
Mass Spec Lab
Tech arrives monday to start setting up.
Still interviewing candidates.
Colloquium
Sept 14th next one.
Fri 3.30 approx every 2 weeks.

We need volunteers to bring snacks to each colloquium.

Spin-off of academia panel - how to balance it all!

Sarah Kruse interested, possibly alumni as well as academics.

Pot luck format like last year.

Chance to meet other grad students and President.
At Riverfront Park with free food.
Can get kayaking passes from Outdoor Rec Center 006 in the gym.
