AUSTRALIA

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world lying on a whole continent. The name ‘Australia’ comes from the Latin ‘Terra Australis’ meaning ‘Southern Land’. Although, it is a very large country still only around twenty million people inhabits it. The major cities are Canberra (the capital), Sydney (the largest city) and Melbourne (the host of the Australian Open).

The beginning of Australian history is not one that people are proud of. It was first discovered by Dutch sailors in the early seventeenth century but it became populous only in the eighteenth century after James Cook, British sailor, claimed New South Wales for Great Britain. Besides the aboriginals, the first inhabitants were convicts and soldiers who arrived on 26th January 1788. This day is called the Australia’s national day or Australia Day in short. In the beginning, it was really hard for everyone especially for women who outnumbered the male population but new settlers came soon and life became better.

Australia keeps strong connections with the mother country even today and recognizes Queen Elizabeth II as its ruler. Since the queen is the head of the United Kingdom too people naturally speak English here, on the fifth continent. Their currency is different however, and it is called Australian dollar. The national flag contains the Union Jack but also the Southern Cross constellation or Crux. The constellation is made up of five stars which can be seen from the southern hemisphere. There is also a sixth star with seven points on the flag which represents the Commonwealth with the six original states and the future ones.
