Meeting place: Zumbrota Golf Club Clubhouse, Zumbrota MN

Meeting called to order at 7:53 P.M. with 6 members present.

It was pointed out that there was a typo in the minutes from our May 15 meeting: The late Dan Burt’s name was misspelled. Motion by John Hosfield to accept minutes, seconded by Pat Veraguth.

Treasurer’s Report:

Deposits $50.17

Withdrawals $7.98

Ending balance (07/16/2008) $1215.29

Motion by Roger Brand to accept Treasurer’s Report, seconded by John Hosfield.

OLD BUSINESS:

MSPS Executive Director Eric Ewald committed to provide banners for the National Surveyor Week in March 2009.

We discussed possible candidates for the MSPS Board of Directors. John Hosfield mentions that telephone conferences are a very effective in reducing the time commitment for Board meetings.

NEW BUSINESS:

Doug Rude keeps us up-to-date on the prevailing wage issue. The Department of Labor and Industries wants to establish one category for all surveyors. There will be a public hearing in front of an administrative judge on July 25, 2008. The strategy of the MSPS committee will be to 1) ask for an exception for all surveyors, 2) ask for two categories (crew chief, rod man) and 3) agree on one category. Despite different opinions member may have about “prevailing wage” John Hosfield and Doug Rude point out, that prevailing wage policies will put the bidding process on equal footing for private firms.

John Hosfield reminds everybody about the upcoming MSPS 2008 Summer Meeting at the Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria MN July 31 through August 1, 2008.

John Hosfield raises the question whether MSPS should keep supporting the MLS Foundation the way it currently does. All of the money spent by the foundation goes towards scholarships of individual students. He wonders whether MSPS should not rather support survey programs or teaching positions at graduate schools and colleges. The present members mostly support his view.

Roger Brand shows off a Sesquicentennial Certificate recognizing Professional Surveyors presented to him and signed by the Chair of Sesquicentennial Recognition, the Director of the Winona County Historical Society, the President of the Winona County Fair, a Winona County Commissioner, the President of the Winona County Farm Bureau and the Winona County Old Settlers.

There was a motion by Doug Rude, seconded by Pat Veraguth, to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:57 P.M.

The next meeting will be Thursday, September 18, 2008. Details to follow.

Respectfully submitted,

Peter G. Oetliker
