JOB DESCRIPTION AND OUTLINE JOB PLAN

1.THE POST

1.1 Title:

Foundation Year 2, General Surgery Department

1.2 Employing Organisation:

1.3 Accountable to:

The appointee will be accountable to the Consultants and Clinical Director for the General Surgery Department.

2.THE DEPARTMENT

The six general surgical consultants work in three teams of two. A broad range of procedures are undertaken including major colorectal resections, pouch surgery, aortic, carotid and distal bypass surgery, laparoscopic surgery including cholecystectomy, hernia repair and colonic resection, and breast surgery. Regular MDTs are held in breast, colorectal and vascular and there is excellent support from specialist nurses in each discipline.

OUTPATIENTS

There is a purpose-built outpatient building providing standard facilities, including X-ray.

CRITICAL CARE

There is a 9-bed facility offering Critical Care to all Acute hospital patients’ specifically invasive and non-invasive ventilation, intercranial pressure monitoring, haemofiltration and invasive cardiac monitoring.

Wards

There are 80 inpatient surgical beds which are available to meet inpatient demand; this includes a 20 bedded Surgical Assessment Unit, which opened in November 2004. A 60 bedded Treatment Centre for both day and 23 hour stay cases opened in January 2005. There is also a 56 bedded medical and surgical GI unit, across two wards.

4.TEACHING, TRAINING, RESEARCH AND CLINICAL AUDIT

Education, Training and Research

There is an active Post Graduate Education Centre which houses the hospital library. There is an active programme of clinical meetings and lectures. The medical library has regular supplies of most journals and has a good selection of books. CD ROM facilities are available on site. There is also an online search facility.

Monthly surgical morbidity and mortality meetings are held along with monthly audit half days. There is an active ongoing programme of clinical audit which the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in.

Audit/Governance

The Healthcare Governance Support Unit has good resources and provides regular support in department projects. There are nine dedicated audit half days per year held in the Post Graduate Centre.
