Midwest Brown Dog News / 2015 /

The Midwest Boykin Spaniel Club has set the date for their summer social and club trial. It will be held June 6th and 7th at Phil and Karen Hinchman’shome in Greenfield, IN. Saturday will be a meet and greet along with a training day in which everyone can participate. Whether you are just starting out with a new puppy or are a seasoned veteran in the retriever games there will be something for everyone. Phil Hinchman and Josh Ward will also be available throughout the day to answer any training questions that you have and will be willing to help you work with your dog one on one. We will be demonstrating different training drills and have some actual hunt test scenarios on land and water for you and your dog to practice on.

Also on Saturday, there will be a pitch in lunch that the club sponsors. All meat, drinks and table service will be provided. All that we ask of the club members is to bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share with everyone. Please RSVP to the Hinchman’s at least a week before the event so that we can get an accurate count for lunch supplies.

Sunday will be the club trial. This is not a pass/fail type test. Instead, each dog is scored by the judges on their performance on land and water and the dog with the most points is the winner. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place dogs in each class of Novice, Intermediate and Open. Lunch will be available for purchase at the test site on Sunday.

If you are planning on participating the entire weekend and need a place to stay there are several motels in Greenfield, IN. Two of them that are recommended are the Super 8, (317)-462-8899 and The Comfort Inn, (317)-467-9999.

National BSS News Update

Spring Nationals are right around the corner! This year we will return to Boykin for our annual National Field Championship. This year’s festivities have been set for April 9th thru April 12th in beautiful Boykin, Rembert, and Camden SC. Activities begin on Thursday with the arrival of the judges and volunteer workers. Handlers arriving Thursday may check in at the E. Clarkson Rhame Memorial Arena with Elaine Baker so as to beat the long line on Friday morning. The Rhame Arena is located at 416 Broad Street, Camden SC, right next to the historic Camden Revolutionary War site.If you are not coming in until Friday or Saturday, come on into Camden and check in at the Rhame Arena. You can get a map and info to help you find all the venues.

The Boykin Spaniel Foundation (BSF) will once again be sponsoring free eye C.E.R.F.and Heart clinics as well as other testing on Thursday afternoon from 11 am– 4 pm. Check in at the Rhame Arena for these also. Remember only one Boykin Spaniel per clinic for the free clinics. If you have more than one dog and wish to have them evaluated then you may do so at the cost the BSF pays to the participating vets.

This will be an action packed weekend with something for everyone in your family. Wewill once again have the Duck Dog Shootout, Hot Dog Retrieve, Speed Dog, Children’s Handling Stake and of course the ever popular Natural Ability stake. Benelli will be returning this year and we are proud to name them as National Sponsors. The BSS is truly thankful for Benelli, Purina and Avery for all they do to make the Nationals a success. All of the fun side games will be The Boykin Gun Club, 1540 Boykin Road (Highway 261). You may sign up for Natural Ability and the other fun stakes at the door. Please pre-register for the Roustabout on Sunday as the bird order for both the Singlesand Doubles flights shall have some margin for error, but not always enough for walk up entries. Keep in mind that all Boykins can participate in these fun games & Natural Ability and it is great to see our friends from Boykin Spaniel Rescue out taking advantage of that.

Club Dues– Just a reminder that your annual club dues will be coming up shortly. These will be arriving in the mail the end of May.
