Community Placement Brief – Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment

The Vision; Community Placements

Here at Middlesex University we want students to be at the heart of our local community and for the local community to see the University at its heart.

We are excited to be offering Community Placements across the borough. These are not volunteering opportunities they are paid placements. They give our students the chance to develop their academic studies in a real world setting. They also give our students the chance to give something back into your area.

All MDXSU placements are paid in line with the London Living Wage Foundation (currently £9.40 per hour).

The Project; Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment

Citizens UK organises communities to act together for power, social justice and the common good. They organise communities in cities across the UK, they help member institutions hold politicians and other decision-makers to account on the issues that matter to them. Across London, Citizens has 220 communities in membership reaching over 350,000 Londoners.

MDXSU and Citizens UK will be working together on a campaign for Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment at the university and in the wider community. Based on research findings and working with student leaders and Citizens UK, the campaign will identify solutions and objectives, and help to effect change within the university and the local community.

The Placement;

You will be part of a team of students working to understand students’ experiences of sexual harassment on campus and in the local community. You will use your research to build a campaign group, identify solutions and campaign for change.

Your team will develop research tools (e.g. mapping exercise, survey, focus groups) to find out whether and where students feel unsafe on campus and in the local community to be used with Middlesex students and with students in local schools.

You will identify hotspots in the local area. You will carry out research to identify best practice for universities in dealing with sexual harassment and sexual violence. You will create an audit of how Middlesex University deals with sexual harassment and sexual violence.

If you think that this is for you then, join us and do something amazing!
