1.  Personal Reading Journal

·  Write your thoughts and feelings after reading each of your literature stories from Taste and Other Tales. The stories are: ‘The Way Up to Heaven’, ‘The Sound Machine’, ‘The Leg of Lamb’, and ‘Poison’.

·  Write your reflection in your Reading Journal.

·  Each reflection should be at least 50 words long. You may use the following questions to in writing the reflection:

-  What do you like about the story? Why? (e.g. clever plot, memorable character, inspirational, beautifully expressed)

-  Which character do you like best or dislike most? Why?

-  What does the story reveal to you about life (e.g. formula for success, what’s important, how to overcome difficulties)?

-  What does the story reveal to you about people (e.g. how people behave, how to relate to people, what do parents worry about)?

-  What issue(s) does the story explore, and what does it say about the issue? (e.g. explores the complications of love, saying that true love is never smooth and easy; explores the tragedy of war, saying that in war there is no real winner)?

-  Are there any points or aspects in the story that you do not understand (e.g. the conclusion, some expressions, a culturally different custom or idea)?

2.  Vocabulary

·  Learn your vocabulary for test in Week 1 of Term 3. Refer to the list given out in Term 2.

·  The list will be posted again on the GMS(S) E-Portal by Friday.

3.  Newspaper work (Choose ONE of the following projects)

(a) About Pictures

·  Look out for pictures in the newspapers or in magazines that show people doing something together (e.g. celebrating, playing, attending a lesson).

·  Select what you feel are the FIVE most interesting pictures. Cut them out and paste them on separate sheets of A4 paper (could be lined or blank).

·  Write ONE sentence for each picture expressing what DIFFERENT thing or situation it reminds you of, or what is says to you.

E.g. a picture of a birthday celebration might remind you of your last birthday celebration, or of your grandmother’s birthday celebration next month, or it may be saying to you that celebrations are useful in bringing friends and family together.

(b) About Articles

·  Pick TWO newspaper reports or articles.

·  Cut them out and mount them on separate sheets of A4 writing paper.

·  In about 40 words, write about what feelings or thoughts you have regarding each report or article.

(c) About Advertisements

·  Choose THREE advertisements that impress you.

·  Cut them out and mount them on separate sheets of A4 writing paper.

·  In about 30 words, write about what message each advertisement is trying to communicate, and how it is trying to convey that message.

E.g. An advertisement might be selling running shoes, and it is trying to say that this pair of running shoes is long lasting. It tries to convey that message through comparing the sports shoes to the tyres of monster trucks.
