Introduction

Taco Bell has become an icon that everyone all across the United States recognizes. It is a well respected and frequently visited fast food chain that serves over 35 million customers each week and two billion customers per year. Taco Bell was founded by Glen Bell on March 21, 1962 in Downey, California. Almost a 150 million see Taco Bell’s commercials a week. However, there is not a Taco Bell in the downtown Midtown Detroit area that is open to the general public. We are proposing to set a plan in place to open up a Taco Bell on Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit.

The city of Detroit has been dramatically affected in the current financial crisis and recession. Any increase in the number of jobs for the surrounding community would be a welcoming site for fellow Detroiters. Taco Bell is one of the most successful and efficient fast food chains in the United States. Franchises have a high rate of profit if they pick the right location. These locations usually involve high traffic business areas and a strong night life community. Even though there are all of the signs of economic life, there is not a sufficient selection of late night fast food restaurants. The area just off of Wayne State University’s main campus on Woodward Avenue is very lacking in quick and easy meal selections. A Taco Bell in this area would be highly successful because of the mix of downtown commuters and college students that live and go to school in the area.

Taco Bell is one of the most recognized fast food chains in the entire United States. They employ more than 143,000 employees across the United States, and they are looking to expand. Detroit communities have been hammered with job losses all across the city and need new employment opportunities. Because of these losses, several other people have lost their jobs. The easiest way to help stimulate the local economy is to start new businesses in the area. We plan to build a new Taco Bell at the northwest corner of Woodward Ave. and W. Willis St. The surrounding area needs jobs. The best way to provide the jobs is to open up strong businesses.

Taco Bell’s signature slogan is “Think Outside the Bun.” This slogan represents a new idea and new selection of food for the consumer. This new Taco Bell will give the surrounding community and late night pedestrians another option, especially, on the weekend. Taco Bells all around the country stay open late on the weekend to attract night owls of every kind, and it has been working for several years.

This Taco Bell will be a different kind of Taco Bell. After establishing a letter of commitment with the WSU College of Business, we will begin running cooperative programs for current students enrolled in the college. This will help us by acquiring a strong and enthusiastic employer-employee relationship, and we will be able to provide a strong learning experience for students interested in finance and business administration.

The methods that we will research for use follow the proposed methods that Taco Bell uses for the success of its new franchises with a few minor changes since we already have a prime location picked out. This is true pending that the site is available for construction. We will start off by researching possible ways to attain the required funds. Next the qualifications to open up the store set by the franchise owners, YumYum Brand, and the city of Detroit will be looked at. We will then research ways to secure the site and register it with both parties. Afterwards, we will research possible construction methods and suitable contractors, and create an interview process to search for possible employees. At this time we will meet with the director of the Wayne State University School of Business to propose a managerial co-op program within the Taco Bell. We will also poll students from Wayne State University and residents of the area to assess the community interest, and monitor and analyze traffic patterns associated with the McDonalds located next to the proposed site to determine a traffic schedule which will aid in setting up an employee schedule, ordering supplies, and assessing possible return for our investors.

Following is an argument on the need for a partnership between businesses and the business school at Wayne State University or away to find existing co-ops that may benefit the business students. The goal is to produce a convincing recommendtion report aimed at both WSU and Taco Bell. The program will let students take a course in management or some similar class, and provide necessary real world experience for the student or find a simple way to obtain a co-op through our program. This joint venture will benefit both the business, in our case Taco Bell, and the students attending the business school who need experience.

Currently there is no partnership in place that will support such a project and co-ops are. Often, students must find jobs on their own. It is likely that the jobs that they do find will not reflect the degree they are studying for. The University does not do enough for students in the aspect of preparation for the “real world”. Without proper experience, businesses will not think to give a call to job applicants, let alone an interview. This is one of the biggest issues for students looking for jobs today. In order to have a solution to this issue, there must be a lot of interaction between the University and Taco Bell. The dialogue between these two bodies must be carefully constructed and developed in order to provide a smooth path for the future. A team will be necessary to develop the right ideas and convey the proper messages to both parties. The beauty of this is that students can help other students, so that there are actually three parties that benefit in total, the University, Taco Bell, and business students.

One of the solutions to thisproblem is to create an intership/co-op program that will allow students and employees toreceive hands on training in a team based environment, which will allow total interaction between the students and employees. This program will be structured in a "real-world" environment, that will provide all the tools necessary to become competitive in todays economic times. The need for first hand and hands-on experience is evident. Bulking up a resume with experience is a sure way to impress a prospective employer. This is where the necessity for this partnership comes from. Not only will the program be centered aroundthe ins and out ofthe Taco Bell Company, the program will give Wayne State Students and Bell employees an insight into marketing strategies, business ventures, localeconomic developments, and otherconsumer relations. The location of the Taco Bell is also taken into consideration, as that it will be very near to the University, making it easy on students to commute, just like it was a classroom.
