Mid-Midterm Study Guide

Your mid-midterm will be worth 200 points and will cover all the material we have gone over so far. You should be ready to answer questions on the following when you take your test:

Readings for Writers

·  For the first six, you will need to summarize something you learned or found significant in each of the articles we read together in our circle from Readings for Writers (which are “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…” “Bricklayer’s Boy” “Rules for Aging” “Move Over Teams” “Incidents with White People” “Warriors Don’t Cry”)

·  “Reading Critically” p. 3-11- You should be able to state one of the tips in Guidelines for Critical Reading.

·  Chapter 2: Rhetoric: The Art of Persuasion” p. 18-37- You should be able to explain in one sentence what rhetoric is.

·  “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words” starts on p. 101- You should be able to state one of the author’s suggestions for how to improve your writing.

·  “Assignment 1: The Research Paper” p. 719-749- You will need to state one of the rules for avoiding plagiarism on p.724 and one of the tips on manuscript appearance on p.728.

·  Chapter 10: “Illustration and Exemplification” p. 370-374- You will need to answer question 3c on p. 375.

·  Chapter 5: “The Writer’s Thesis” p. 133-141- You will write a concise thesis statement on a topic I give you.

·  Chapter 6: “Organizing Ideas” p. 171-179- You will write one tip given by the author on organizing.

·  “The Editing Booth” p. 695-718- You will revise a sentence I give you in order to improve it.

·  “Warriors Don’t Cry” (p. 537-541) and “Incidents With White People” (p. 542-546) - You will have to explain which of these was a more effective Division/Classification essay AND WHY. It should be evident in your answer that you read both of these articles.

·  “What—and How—to Write When You Have No Time to Write” (p. 42-45) –You will have to state TWO of the tips for writing he gives (and there are 10 to choose from).

·  “The Waltz” (p. 116-121)—You will answer question 4 under Strategies on p. 120

·  “Causal Analysis” (p. 555-608)—You will answer “According to the diagram on p. 555, what is the link between the cause and the effect.” You will then draw the following:

·  “Division/Classification” (p. 510-514)—You will state one of the three tips for How to Use Division Classification listed on p. 511-512.

·  “The Writer’s Voice?” (p. 95-99)—You will need to do exercise 1 on p. 99.

·  “Tone: The Writer’s Voice in the Reader’s Mind” (p. 111-116)—You will need to do question 2 under The Facts on p.115.

·  “The New Feminism” (p. 594-596)—You will answer the first question listed for question 3 under The Issues on p. 597.

The Wadsworth Handbook

·  “Patterns of Paragraph Development” p. 87-94- You will need to read a body paragraph and tell me what pattern it is. Your choices of patterns will be listed.

·  “Constructing an Informal Outline” p. 48-49- You will need to write a very brief informal outline on a general topic I give you. You will also need to state the difference between a formal and informal outline.

·  “Using Semicolons” p. 686-692- You will have 7 sentences in which you will need to place the semicolon/s correctly.

The Last Lecture

§  You will have true/false statements based on occurrences in the book and from our classroom discussion.

§  You will have a list of quotes and will have to identify the speaker plus the significance of each quote to the book. The choices of people who said the quotes are: Randy, Jai, Andy van Dam, Randy’s mother, William Shatner, or Coach Graham. (These people will not be noted on the test, so remember them.)

§  You should be prepared to state the title of your favorite chapter and why.

§  You will also have to answer other short questions on the book, including being able to state the title of one of the articles and something you learned from that article you did not find out in the book.

·  You will have to write a paragraph on a causal analysis topic.

·  You will have to write a paragraph on an illustrative/exemplification topic.

The test will be 60 questions, and you will need to complete it by the end of the period.
