Hartsville Middle School
7th Grade Math
Ms. Jeanmougin
Welcome to the new school year! Math is an exciting, fun, and challenging subject. I hope that by everyone working together, we can have a successful year!
Math Course Overview:
This seventh grade mathematics course will focus its instructional time on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. Concepts, procedures, and vocabulary that students will need in order to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses are introduced and continually practiced. Problem solving strategies are also an integral part of the curriculum.
Materials:
Pencils, paper, binder or folder to hold handouts, composition notebook; coloring materials will be used in class but not needed on a daily basis.
Units of Study:
We will be covering a combination of introductory algebra, geometry, probability and statistics in this class using a variety of textbook, online, and other resources.
Assessments: Some form of assessment will be given weekly. Students should always be prepared by practicing homework and reviewing notes daily. After grading and going over quizzes with the students, I will give them back to keep. Please keep all quizzes and tests until after state testing later in the year.
Grading: The district-wide grading policy will be followed.
The grading scale is as follows: Grades will be classified into three categories:
A (93-100) Major (50%)
B (85-92) Minor (40%)
C (77-84) Daily/Homework Effort (10%)
D (70-76)
F (Below 70)
We will have a minimum of 3 major grades, 8 minor grades, and 10 homework grades per quarter(9 weeks).
Students and parents may keep up with grades through Power School.
Homework:
Homework is a very important part of learning each math lesson, and it will be given almost every day as reinforcement and practice. Assignments will be checked at the beginning of class each day for completion or accuracy based on the assignment. This information will be announced ahead of time. Late assignments will not be accepted if we go over it in class. There will be a mark in the assignment on parent portal noting that an assignment is missing if it can still be submitted. Homework is a very crucial part of learning. It is imperative that it is completed.
Bellwork:
All students need to have a separate composition notebook for daily bellwork. This is a great tool for reflection, reinforcement, and classroom discussion. The journals will also include other math related material throughout the year. These journals will be collected at three random times each 9 week quarter for a minor grade.
Make-Up/Absences:
Make-up work is the student’s responsibility! Immediately upon returning to school, students should ask for missed work. Students will have a reasonable amount of time to complete the work, or a zero will be given. I will be happy to answer any questions or explain any concepts, but I need to be asked for help!
Remind 101:
I can send cell phone text messages to students and/or parents as reminders for homework, tests, etc. The text is sent from the website (NOT my cell phone) and cannot be replied to. It is another great communication tool I recommend. Please sign up by sending “@msjeanmou” in the message text to the number 81010.
By working together, we can have a great year!!
