PROCEDURE 1 (p. 99-100)

Obtain a slide of stratified squamous epithelial tissue. View under HIGH power (400X). Locate the basement membrane. Draw under HIGH power.Label: basement membrane, nuclei in epithelial tissue, epithelial tissue, & connective tissue

  1. Do you see more than one layer of cells?
  2. What shape are the cells?
  3. What is the function of the basement membrane?
  4. Do you see blood vessels? Explain why or why not?
  5. Describe where are the youngest cells located? (Be specific)

PROCEDURE 2 (p. 98-99)

Obtain a slide of intestine. View under LOW power. Locate the villi. They are the fingerlike projections. Switch to HIGH power. Find the epithelial cells. Note the glandular cells located in pits scattered on the surface of the villi. Draw under HIGH (400X) power.Label: basement membrane, nuclei in epithelial tissue, & goblet cells (glandular cells)

  1. How many layers of cells do you see?
  2. What shape are the cells?
  3. What is the function of the goblet/gland cells?
  4. Is this tissue simple or stratified?
  5. What is the function of this epithelial tissue? (Think location)

PROCEDURE 3 (p. 106-107)

Obtain a slide of elastic cartilage. View under HIGH power. Locate the layer of cartilage-producing cells. They are the dark staining cells in a layer. Draw under HIGH power. Label: Lacunae and nuclei of chondrocytes

  1. Why do you think cartilage is slow to heal after an injury?
  2. Name, describe, and give the location of the 3 types of cartilage.

PROCEDURE 4 (p. 107-108)

Obtain a slide of human bone. View under HIGH power. Locate the bone cells (osteocytes). They are located in tiny chambers (lacunae) surrounded by bone. Draw under HIGH power.Label: lacunae, Osteonic canal, canaliculi

  1. What pattern are the cells arranged in?
  2. What is the general term used to describe the non-living substance surrounding the bone cells?

PROCEDURE 5 (p. 110-111)

Obtain a slide of the three types of muscle tissue. View under HIGH power. Draw each type of muscle tissue under HIGH power.For each, Label: nuclei

1.How do the muscle types compare to each other?

2. In cardiac muscle, what is the function of the intercalated disc? (Check chapter 8)

3. Give an example of where each of the 3 muscle types can be found.

PROCEDURE 6 (p 112)

Obtain a slide of human multi-polar neurons. View under HIGH power. Locate the neuron.Label: nucleus of cell body neuroglial cells

  1. What is the name of the basic nerve cell?
  2. What is the function of the above?
  3. Name where the nervous tissue is located in the body.
