MichiganStateUniversity – Online Certificate in Homeland Security Studies

Michigan State University’s, School of Criminal Justice and it’s Global Community Security Institute is now offering an online Certificate in Homeland Security Studies consisting of three core courses. Designed for both traditional students and current practitioners interested in updating their skills, the program is delivered entirely online in asynchronous format using MSU’s established ANGEL course management system. Students are not required to attend classes or meetings on campus. Students may enroll for either undergraduate or graduate credits as appropriate.

Required Core Courses:

Three core courses will be required to earn the certificate, with the first offered for the 2004 fall semester:

  • Foundations of Homeland Security (2004 Fall Semester and 2005 Spring Semester)
  • Issues in Terrorism (2005 Spring Semester)
  • Public-Private Sector Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security (2005 Summer Semester)

There are no prerequisites or prescribed order for students to enroll for any of these courses. It is planned to offer all three core courses on a regular calendar rotation so that students could complete the entire certificate program in a single year, individual schedules and resources permitting. Successful completion of each course earns three academic credits, with nine total credits recorded on student transcripts for completion of the entire certificate program. Expectations and work requirements for graduate students will be appropriately higher than those for undergraduate students in each course.

Current MSU students will enroll through the university’s regular registration process. All others may enroll online as Lifelong Education students. Lifelong Education students who possess a high school diploma or its equivalent will be accepted as undergraduate students; those who already possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution will be accepted as graduate students.

Participants who are currently matriculated or who late gain admission into a degree-granting program may apply class credits toward completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at MSU (including the established Internet Master’s in Criminal Justice program), or transfer them to another institution. Prospective students should consult with their respective academic advisors regarding restrictions on electives and transfer credits.

MichiganStateUniversity has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
