MAME AWARDS RULES

The following rules apply to all awards.

Nominations that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.

1.  All Awards will be presented at the annual MAME conference.

2.  There shall be only one individual or group recognized per award.

3.  The Awards and Citations Committee will select the recipient.

4.  The nomination is to be limited to one page in length and should be to the back of the designated nomination form. (The only exceptions are the “Promotion of Library Media Programs” and “Educator’s” awards, which specifically ask for additional documentation).

5.  Information should be clear, concise, and based on award criteria.

6.  All nominations must be postmarked by May 31st of the current year to be considered by the Awards and Citations Committee.

7.  The Awards and Citations Committee will notify all nominators of the final decisions before the MAME conference.

Ruby Brown Award for Individual Excellence

Named in honor of Ruby Brown, a life-long educator and school librarian,

and the main benefactress of MAME.

PURPOSE: To recognize excellence in an individual who has helped promote and integrate the use of library media in the curriculum and to encourage local-level awareness of the importance of media within the curriculum.
CRITERIA: Awarded to an individual within a library media program who has made an outstanding contribution toward, or development of, an especially creative or constructive program that has prompted the advancement of media services.

1.  List the activities that this individual has done to help promote and integrate the use of media in the curriculum.

2.  List the activities that have been carried out to encourage local-level awareness of this person’s activities.

3.  List any outstanding contributions toward the development of an especially creative or constructive program that has prompted the advancement of media services.

Margaret Grazier Award for

Contribution to the Profession

Named in honor of Professor Margaret Grazier, who inspired and nurtured hundreds of children, students and fellow media specialists.

PURPOSE: To recognize an individual who has made sustained contributions to the general principals of media in education and to state and local media organizations.
CRITERIA: Awarded to a person (member or non-member) who has displayed outstanding service to the library/media profession, promoting its goals, its growth and its overall effectiveness in Michigan.

1.  List and document the major accomplishments made by the nominee in the library/media field.

2.  List the contributions made by the nominee to MAME and/or other local organizations.

3.  Highlight any special characteristics of the individual that support these accomplishments.


Mary Anne Paulin Award for Reading Advocacy

Named in honor of Mary Ann Paulin, a tireless crusader for

literacy and quality children’s literature.

PURPOSE: To acknowledge exemplary leadership and advocacy in instilling a life-long love of reading in children and young adults.

CRITERIA: A library media specialist and current or retired member of MAME who demonstrates exemplary leadership in:

1.  Guiding children and young adults in becoming life-long readers

2.  Fostering an appreciation for creative expressions of information in children and young adults

3.  Establishing innovative and creative and/or ongoing reading incentive programs

4.  Promoting reading and literacy-related activities (storytelling, author visits, etc.)

Pat Slocum Award forOutstanding Meritorious Service to MAME

Named in honor of Pat Slocum, who tirelessly served the entire library media profession through her efforts as a state consultant.

PURPOSE: To recognize outstanding participation and leadership in the activities of MAME and to the profession of library/media service.
CRITERIA: Awarded to an individual currently serving or retired who has contributed or sustained outstanding efforts to MAME projects. Emphasis is on service above and beyond what might be expected from a member.

1.  List the involvements directly related to MAME that would qualify this individual for the award.

2.  List other related activities/involvements with MAME, such as other organizations involved with library/media services.

3.  Has this individual been recognized by any other groups for similar activities?


Roger Ashley Freedom to Read Award
Named in Honor of MAME Past President and retired Executive Director Roger Ashley,
a staunch defender of First Amendment rights.


PURPOSE: To recognize an individual or group who demonstrate exemplary support for our First Amendment rights: the right to read and listen, and the right to express ideas without governmental interference.


CRITERIA: Awarded to current or retired MAME member(s) who demonstrate exemplary efforts to protect First Amendment freedoms for students and staff by defending equitable access to a rich and balanced collection that reflects multiple views and opinions.

1.  Describe and document why this individual or group should be recognized as outstanding example(s) of defense of the Right to Read.

2.  Provide additional background information that puts these contributions into context.

3.  Individuals or groups who receive this award will be placed in nomination for the following year’s American Association of School Librarians Intellectual Freedom Award.

4.  Nominations should include support material that demonstrates how the award winner(s) uphold the principles of intellectual freedom.

School Library Media Specialist of the Year

PURPOSE: To recognize an individual in the school library media field who is a current member of MAME and who exhibits personal leadership in fulfilling the roles of teacher,

information specialist and instructional consultant.

CRITERIA:

1.  Shows evidence of personal leadership in fulfilling the roles of teacher, information specialist and instructional consultant as defined by the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.

2.  Shows evidence of professional involvement in the school library media field.

3.  Shows evidence of providing a quality school library media program for K-12

students and teachers that reflects a personal philosophy of information technology

application and utilization.

School Library Media Program of the Year

PURPOSE: To recognize excellence in schools and personnel for providing library/media programs in elementary and/or secondary schools.

CRITERIA: Awarded to promote community awareness of outstanding services available to students and to emphasize the role of media resources and professionals in educational programs and in child development.

1.  Describe and document why this program should be recognized as an outstanding example of library/media programming at the local level.

2.  List the person(s) responsible for success of this program.

3.  List appropriate staff and titles of other individuals who are involved in this library/media program, who are supportive, or who receive direct support as a result of this program.

Promotion of School Library Media Programs Award

PURPOSE: To recognize an individual or group for making a significant contribution in helping the public understand the role of school library media programs.

CRITERIA: Awarded to an individual or group for innovative efforts in promoting library media programs through the use of technology or traditional communication venues.

1.  List the type(s) of communication venues used to inform the public about library

media programs.

2.  Attach any publications, print-outs, press releases, photographs, and/or other

documentation, or provide other pertinent examples (URLs, Web sites, CDs, DVDs, etc.) that verify the information dissemination efforts.

3.  Attach documentation indicating public relations impact.

4.  Indicate recognition given by any other educational or professional organization.

Educator’s Award for Outstanding Use of Media Services

PURPOSE: To recognize individual teachers who have been exemplary in utilizing library/media services and have encouraged and promoted such activities by students.

CRITERIA: Awarded to acknowledge the importance of teacher involvement in successful library/media programs.

1.  In what grade(s) or subject area(s) does this teacher involve media?

2.  Describe the outstanding media used by the teacher that exemplifies a meritorious use of media different from regular media usage.

3.  Give supportive documentation from the school media center and from the students. Include any other items that support the nomination.

Service Award for Adult Volunteers

PURPOSE: To recognize an adult volunteer who has made sustained and/or outstanding contributions to a library/media center program.


CRITERIA: Awarded to a person to promote adult volunteerism in local library/media services.

1.  Describe the volunteer's service to the library/media center.

2.  Describe the direct or indirect benefits to students and/or staff.

3.  Indicate the amount of time the volunteer has contributed to the library/media program.

Service Award for School Administrators

PURPOSE: To recognize responsible influence, support and commitment by a school district administrator(s) role of in the implementation of a successful school library/media program.

CRITERIA: Awarded to a district school administrator or team of administrators who have made a unique and sustained contribution toward furthering the role of the school library/media center and its development in a school program.

1.  Describe and document the following: a. administrative leadership and effort; b. contribution to the concept of effective school library/media services; and c. success in interpreting the role of the school library/media services in the education program.

2.  Provide the basic information on the school size, economic, and possible environmental factors influencing the administration of the school.

3.  Provide a factual description of the school library/media program at the time the administrator(s) began the program contrasted with the current situation.

4.  Provide a concise statement of current commitments and future goals for the improvement of school library/media services.

District Library Media Director of the Year

PURPOSE: To recognize a school district library media director who provides exemplary leadership and direction to an overall district program.

CRITERIA:

1.  Shows evidence of leadership, consultation, communication, coordination, and administration skills, as defined in Information Power: Guidelines for School Library/Media Programs.

2.  Serves as a liaison between the schools, the district, and the board of education.

3.  Advocates partnerships between building level school media specialists and teachers by providing appropriate staffing levels.

4.  Recognizes the unique needs of individual programs and buildings within the district.

5.  Acts as a mentor to district media personnel by demonstrating effectiveness as a specialist in the library media field, knowledge about new technology and skill as a supervisor.

Service Award for Boards of Education

PURPOSE: To recognize the responsible and influential role of Boards of Education in developing successful school library/media center programs.

CRITERIA: Awarded to a district school board which has made decisions that indicate consistent and unique school library/media support.

1.  What type of curriculum support has this school board given to the library/media programs that demonstrates outstanding leadership?

2.  What types of funding are established to further promote library/media programs in the school district?

3.  Does this district recognize outstanding library/media personnel in-house?

Library Media Programs Support Award for a Government Official

PURPOSE: To recognize an individual government official at the local, state or national level who has demonstrated a major commitment to the advancement of library media services, as shown by the advocacy, support, or introduction of legislation or initiatives that promote library media programs.

CRITERIA: Awarded to promote professional awareness of the influential role of government officials.

1.  What is this individual’s position and what role has this individual had in advocating, funding or supporting legislation or initiatives that will promote library media programs?

2.  Has this individual been recognized by any other groups for similar activities?

3.  Has this individual been involved with any MAME projects? If so, please list.


MAME Mentor Award

Purpose: The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual who has provided sustained and exemplary guidance, support and inspiration to colleagues in the library media profession.

Criteria: Awarded to an individual who epitomizes the traits of an enthusiastic and effective mentor and role model, and who has been an advocate for the library media profession. Additionally, nominees must be retired (or retiring within the current year), must have spent a minimum of ten years in the library media profession, and should demonstrate sustained and active membership in MAME.

1. Describe/document how this individual has provided support and guidance to colleagues.

2. Describe/document how this person has acted as an inspiration to colleagues.

3. Document this individual’s career history, including retirement date.

4. Document this individual’s involvement with MAME.

Media Specialist/Teacher Collaboration Award

PURPOSE: To recognize exemplary collaboration between school library media specialist(s) and teacher(s) in implementing effective information literacy instruction.

CRITERIA: Awarded to a media specialist or team of media specialists who are MAME members and who work collaboratively with a teacher or group of teachers to create a curriculum-related program, unit or event that incorporates media center resources, the research process, reading advocacy, literacy support and/or technology integration.

2. Describe in detail the collaborative process, including the end result.

3. Provide supportive documentation, such as student work, assessments or products.
