Michelle Munroe, MSN, CNM

Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing
/ Lieutenant Colonel Michelle L. Munroe is the Commandant and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at USU’s Graduate School of Nursing. In these roles, she oversees education, training, professional development and other daily activities for all GSN students.Lieutenant Colonel Munroe earned both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing with specialization in Nurse Midwifery from the University of Maryland. While working toward her undergraduate degree, Lieutenant Colonel Munroe commissioned in the Army nurse corps. After graduating, she worked as a staff nurse at major military hospitals in Texas and Virginia.
After completing her first duty assignments, Lieutenant Colonel Munroe became a Certified Nurse Midwife and cared for new mothers and their families at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii and Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington.
While stationed in Washington, Lieutenant Colonel Munroe deployed to Iraq with the Deployed Combat Casualty Research Team and earned a Bronze Star for implementing TeamSTEPPS, a program focused on patient safety in 2008. One year later, she earned the Anita Newcomb McGee Award for the Army Nurse of the Year.
Before coming to USU, Lieutenant Colonel Munroe served as the Deputy Commander for Nursing at the Kenner Army Health Clinic at Fort Lee in Virginia. Her service record, experience in the field and extensive military education – which includes attending the Interagency Institute for Federal Health Care Executives, completing the Command and General Staff Officers Course; Executive Skills, Advanced Nurse Leadership, Head Nurse, Officer Advanced and
Officer Basic Courses have prepared her for the leadership role she has taken on at USU.
Lieutenant Colonel Munroe is a highly decorated officer. She’s earned the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Action Badge, and has served in one unit receiving distinction with the Meritorious Unit Commendation. She is also the recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit Medallion.
Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Munroe is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives, where she is President of the Uniformed Services Affiliate. She is also a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the Army Nurse Corps Association. She holds the Army Surgeon General's "9A" Proficiency Designator.
