COURSE POLICIES

Come to class prepared to participate. There will be assignments associated with each class session, some to be done individually, some to be done as groups. If you have questions, call or e-mail. If I am unable to take a call, my phone will be off, so don’t be concerned about disturbing me. Attendance is strongly encouraged and required for those that want to receive the OSHA 10 Hour General Industry card. I intend to keep office hours on Thursday evenings, but suggest that you make an appointment in advance if a face-to-face meeting is required. There are two required exams. Each will be open-book, open-note, take home exams, and I expect them to be completed without consulting your classmates. Homework assignments, on the other hand, should take full advantage of whatever resources are available, including your classmates. However, the work should be uniquely your own. Assignments, including exams, are due by midnight at the end of the due date, and should be e-mailed. Late work may not be graded and so may receive a zero. Assignments will be distributed electronically as soon as possible following the class where the relevant topic was covered.

GRADING

Grading will not be on a curve. Thus, it will be possible for every student in the class to receive an A (my hope) or for no student in the class to receive an A (my fear). Grades will be based on individual assignments, projects, and exams. Their contribution to your grade is

20%Individual assignments, based on ten assignments of equal weight, two of which will be done in class.

20%Projects,based on two assignments of equal weight (done individually, or optionally, as a pair).

60%Exams, based on the best of two of three exams.

There will be two take-home exams. The first will cover the material covered up to that point. The second will cover the material covered after the first exam up to the exam. The final exam is optional. It will be comprehensive. Like the two required exams, it will be open book, open note, and take home. If you elect to take the final exam, the two best exam scores will be the basis of the exam contribution to your grade. The final cannot hurt your grade

Grades will follow traditional American scoring, after rounding to the nearest whole number:

A 90% to 100%

B 80% to 89%

C 70% to 79%

D 60% to 69%

F 59% or less
