Principal’s Message

Most students are filled with a sense of anxious anticipation as we near the midpoint of the second semester and report card time. Although these feelings are normal, there are some things that students can do to reduce their stress and become more confident in their self evaluation. Doing regular daily assignments and studying in advance for an exam can go a long way to alleviating anxiety. The use of a planner or organizer will also help students to be prepared and make the best use of their time.

Thank you to Erin Lange for all of her years of dedicated service as assistant caretaker at W.W.Brown School. We wish Erin all the best in her next career path. Welcome to Daphne Hanneson who has accepted the part time caretaker position alongside our head caretaker, Terry Klein. Thank you as well to Tammy Beriault, who has been a huge help as a substitute caretaker, when we have been between contracts.

On April 21 and 22, two of our students will be representing the W.W. Brown daVinci Project at the Provincial Skills Competition in Regina. Ethan L. will be competing in Cabinet Making (Secondary), and Jesse N. will be competing in Construction Carpentry (Secondary). We wish both boys all the best as they compete for a chance to represent Saskatchewan at the National Skills Competition.

We would like to thank a delegate member with Affinity Credit Union (Langham Branch) for sponsoring this newsletter. If you are interested in buying advertising space in the combined Elementary/High School newsletter, please contact Walter W. Brown School (ph. 283-4434).

SRC News

1. March can be a long month for students: winter isn't over yet, the roads are bad, conditions aren't the best for snowmobiling, and there's a lot of school left before summer holidays will arrive. The Walter W. Brown School SRC did their best to rally school spirit with a March Spirit Week. Students were treated with a variety of dress up days, as well as the perennial favorite "Hat Day".

2. Students were offered a special ‘March Madness’ fundraiser organized by Mr. Huber. This basketball-themed event is being used to raise money for a family in need.

3. The SRC has helped arrange student volunteers to staff the table for Snack Attack. Special thanks to those who helped find the money to fund this worthwhile endeavour.

4. We have two final bingos scheduled for this school year. Badminton, Track, and Outdoor Education are the activities left for fundraising. The dates are as follows:

Saturday, April 16 (10:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.)

Saturday, May 14 (10:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.)

Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences

Semester Two conferences will be held on April 28. Interviews will be scheduled at ten-minute intervals from 3:30 – 5:30 pm, and again from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Please call Jan to book a time that best suits you.

Supplies

Parents, please ensure that students have a replenished supply of paper, pens, pencils, etc. so they may be able to carry out their daily class work.

Many Thanks

The Langham Travel Club wishes to thank the Sasktel Bridge City Pioneers Club for a donation toward our fundraising efforts. We appreciate your support for our educational excursion which will take place during Easter Break 2017.

Senior Drama

The Walter W. Brown School Senior Drama Club will be performing The Game, by Louise Bryant, at the Saskatchewan Drama Regional Festival at Warman High School on Friday, March 15th at 7:00 pm. Life (Rachel M.) and Death (Mitchell Y.) throw dice for the lives of a poet (Austin Z.), a dancer (Hanna P.), kings, and soldiers. Come out and support our students as they compete in their first Regional Festival! Mr. Knowles and Mrs. Neale

Dynasty Days

This year’s Dynasty Days was a huge success. Friday, February 26 was a beautiful day full of afternoon fun for the Grades 6-9’s. The Grade 10 students spent the previous few weeks planning for Dynasty Days during their Wellness class. The Middle Years spent the afternoon sled jousting, ice sculpting, tire racing, playing charades, musical chairs, ball hockey, snowball throwing, and hockey shooting. The weather was perfect for being outside in the snow. There was also hot chocolate available to top off a great afternoon. Leanne Q.

PE 20 SCUBA

PED 20 students enjoyed a day at the Battlefords Aquatic Centre on March 15thwith the Discover SCUBA Program. Through a grant made available by the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs and funded through SIGA, the PADI leader, Dennis McCullough, led the students through the necessary skills for an introduction to SCUBA. Once the students were ready, they were allowed to spend the rest of the afternoon swimming around and posing for pictures at the bottom of the pool. It was a day well spent! PE 30 students will have the same opportunity on April 19th. Mr. Chalifour

Senior Boys Basketball

Our Senior Boys Basketball team had a great season. We played a total of thirty-two games this year, combining home and away games and tournaments in Lashburn, Hepburn, Davidson, Maidstone, Leask, and at home.

A few statistics regarding our season… We are a 2A school, but played half our games against 3A teams. Over half of our games were against top-ten teams that advanced to Regionals and Provincials in 1A, 2A, and 3A categories.

On the first weekend of March we hosted Conference Playoffs. We lost our first game to Valley Christian Academy (provincially ranked #2, and eventual provincial bronze medalists). Ecole Canadienne (provincially ranked #3) also advanced out of our conference and went on to win the provincial gold medal. Although it was heartbreaking to lose, I am very proud of our boys. They never give up, and always give 100% until the buzzer goes, regardless of the score. Mr. Neufeld

Grade 5/6 Basketball

Our Grade 5/6 Boys and 5/6 Girls basketball teams started up before the February Break. I coached the thirteen boys from Grades 5 and 6, and Jason McDonald and Laura Prefontaine coached the fourteen girls that played. Thank you to the Senior Boys basketball players (Jesse N. and Wyatt M.) who came out to assistant coach and to help the 5/6 Boys team with developing their basketball skills. Thank you to our Junior Girls basketball players (Paige D., Tiana D., Rachel N., and Hannah M.), who were the assistant coaches with the 5/6 Girls team.

We played fiveexhibition mini-tournaments against Valley Manor School and Venture Heights School (both from Martensville) and Warman Middle School. Our season ended on Friday, March 18 with all-day tournaments for the Girls in Martensville, and a Boys tournament at Warman Middle School. The Girls ended up losing a very close game in the “B” side championship. The boys defeated Warman in OT, and then Venture Heights to advance to the “A” side championship, losing a close game to VCA and bringing home silver.

It was a real pleasure to be able to work with a group of kids that were so eager to learn a very technical game that is new to them. Our basketball program has a very bright future. Mr. Neufeld

Junior Curling

Hard to believe that our curling season has wound down for the year already. We have had a wonderful season with our junior curlers. We have had a solid year of practices and exhibition games, followed by hosting the Division conferences held on Feb. 25 and 26. We also had a fun game against the parents at our wind-up with pizza and pop...man can those parents curl!

Our Junior Girls team; Kerri L., Hailey F., Shayla T., and Tilly-Ann B. had great team chemistry and determination and did our school proud at the Playdowns. They won their first games quite handily with scores at 12-0, and 10-2 and then one tough loss against Allan. The girls qualified for the semi-finals and played the best game they have ever played. They had two steal points locked up for the win and the opposing skip made a "television shot" to win the game. The girls did so well, and for such a young team, these girls sure have lots of potential for the future!!

Our Junior Boys team - Cody M., Robert P., Porter J., and Scott T.- was solid through the opening games. They won three straight games to land a spot to compete for the gold medal for Conference championship. They boys came up against a very sharp Rosthern team and couldn't quite come back from a stolen end, but they still did an amazing job. It is very exciting to be the second place Boys team in the Division, what an accomplishment for two boys who had never curled before, and two boys that didn't play for two seasons. Way to go!

Both teams were complimented on their sportsmanship and positive attitude on the ice, which goes to show what a great group of students I have had to work with this year. It has been an enjoyable and rewarding season working with these young curlers. Hope to see you all curling next year!

A big thank you to Clayton Wurtz for his consistent, wonderful ice conditions for games, practices and Conferences. We are so lucky to have you! Also a big thank you to all volunteer ice officials and time keepers for conferences: Clayton Wurtz, Robert Halliday, Marilyn Dunne, Shannon Lewis, Maureen Linch, Brian Thiessen, Jason Farthing, and Chantelle MacLeod. The day would not have been a success without you all.

Also, a big thank you to Darla Eppen for helping with the curling season this year, and to Chantelle MacLeod for coming to help at practice when her school schedule allowed. The students were very lucky to have your help! Ms. Ryde
