That's My Window On The World

It's time to close the shutters...

The time has finally come for me to say GOOD-BYE as the 7th Prez of the METRO Parrot Head Nation and welcome our 8th President & First Lady!

My four years have quickly passed and it is now my turn to pass the METRO Parrot Head Club Tiki Torch onto our new leader. On 08-08-08 history will be made in our METRO Parrot Head Nation because for the first time ever the President of the METRO PHC will not reside in New York! Our new President & First Lady will be setting up the METRO PHC Oval Office in Connecticut. I want to congratulate Dave Pohorylo and his lovely wife Carol and wish them both the best of luck as they begin to lead the METRO PHC.

For many years Carol & Dave have put together the "Swim Across The Sound" silent auction which is one of my favorite METRO PHC events on our yearly calendar. Each year they have added to this event which is really now a two day affair. Friday, June 6th they had Jim Morris at the Acoustic Cafe & Saturday, June 7th Jim & the Big Bamboo preformed at the Silent Auction at Captain's Cove in Bridgeport CT. The total profit that was sent to Swim Across the Sound was an amazing $14,000.00.

If you missed this year’s silent auction be sure to write on your calendar SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, June 6, 2009. Once you attend this very special event you will never want to miss it! There is a large quantity of wonderful items to bid on.

I know that the club will be in good hands with Dave & Carol; no job will be too big or too hard for these two to handle. Dave has a lot of close friends to help him out. Those of you who attended the Silent Auction know that one of his good friends just happens to be Jim Morris!
*To all METRO PHC Members: if you have any questions, ideas or concerns about the club please contact your local club coordinators.
*To all METRO PHC Area Coordinators: to help Dave out with his PHiP Interim Report & the Annual PHiP Club Renewal Report, please send him the following at the end of each month:
Your areas club activities for the month, number of club members in attendance, number of hours of each event & the amount of money raised, if any, at each event.
Well after reading my column for 48 consecutive weeks: "It's time to close the shutters. It's time to go inside. In a week I'll be in Alaska. That's a mighty long airplane ride. I must confess I could use some rest, I can't run at this pace very long. Yes it's quite insane. I think it hurts my brain. Yes my house is cleaned out of Parrot Head stuff and now I can go on." (Stolen from Jimmy's song: Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season with a twist of course)!
Thanks for four great years filled with wonderful memories.

Ale!

Al, Fare You Well
It was a sultry evening in August of 2004. The pandemonium had phlown to Sayville for Margaritaville Night starring the Ed Travers Band. Shortly after Ed began to serenade his very colorful audience,he introduced Al to the phlock. Of course Al had been inaugurated in full regality a few weeks earlier at the Family Picnic donned in a Buffett shirt, thongs (4 years later commonly referred to as flip flops) and shorts. The transfer of power was completeas Al was crowned with a sesame-studded cheeseburger hat, received a lei (of the floral kind), and of course was presented with the traditional Margarita. Al was definitely the King of Somewhere Hot as the summer sun did its job.
Back to Sayville…
As Al was basking in his new found fame, I managed to squeak in a “hello” and “if I can do anything to help” comment. I had every intention in doing my part as Metro Parrot head, but never would have I guessed I would be typing this article. Needless to say, this unexpected contribution to the MPHC has allowed me to get to know Al & Marianne on a whole new level. Something I would not have experienced had not I made this attempt to fill Joe’s flip flops. Getting to know the first couple was an honor, and I am going to miss his encouraging emails and amusing quips. Thank you Al for making MY job soooo much easier. You have been a terrific president, but you have also been a great friend and counselor regarding the PP. Now that you will have so much more time on your hands, Scott & I look forward to enjoying a few extra Landsharks with you & Marianne. Good luck in retirement.
THAT’S MY STORY & I’M STICKING TO IT

Buffett Double Play:
Atlantic City
Jones Beach
Aug 24th & 27th
As we all know, Jimmy will be playing 2 more dates in our area. He will make his 2nd debut in the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on Aug 24th. After a 3 day break of probable surfing and sailing, Jimmy will then play his long awaited Jones Beach show on the 27th. Tailgating in New Jersey will be taking place on the Boardwalk (just phollow the pheathers and phins). The Jones Beach festivities will take place in Parking Lot #5. Concert ticketholders parking in the General Parking area will not incur the $8 fee. Be sure to look for The Toucan Band & Ed Travers in the parking lot. Look for more details in theBanana Wind as the dates get closer. The Toucan Band usually sets up camp on the southern most parking lot. Just look for a PIRATE. Also, Ed will be performing 3 shows that day. Be sure to catch Ed’s shows at 1 & 5PM. He will be located just west (about 25 cars west of the bathrooms—how’s that for directions!) If you are lucky enough to have VIP tickets, you can also see Ed at 3PM in the VIP Parking Lot.

Parrotheds…
Ck dis ot!
As I mentioned in Al, Fare You Well, this past year I have enjoyed the pleasure of corresponding with many Metros on a regular basis. Most of these communications take place on the new information superhighway…Toasters talk to crackberries; Boston to Bombay; Teenage schemes and Ma Bell dreams as minutes tick away…
The other day I was pleasantly surprised to find an actual HAND-WRITTEN message (yes parakeets, we used to do that and it wasn’t written in SMS~ u no wat I mean?)
But that’s all ancient history; Like bongs and lincoln logs; Now we’re living like the Jetson’s; In a wacky wireless fog.
The note I am referring to was from Metro PH Kerry Abernethy. The note was nice but what also caught my attention was the illustration on the front. It was the Abernethy Parrot Head family similar to the illustration.
After several Messages in a bottle ,Rhythm of a drums ,Smoke signals and telegraphs,
I found out that Kerry has now become an Independent Consultant for Happy Labels and these personalized Parrot Head note cards are one of their products! How kool is dat?
If anyone is interested in note cards or address labels, all you need to do is go to
At this time, if you wish to order the return labels, place a regular order with a note in the comment box to add the parrot heads. Any questions contact Kerry at
Think that I might die if I miss anything at all

"Parrot Points" /
….Then join "The Last Mangos" Team as we participate in the NYC Chapter Memory Walk 2008 to support Alzheimer's research. The walk takes place on Sunday, October 26th in beautiful Riverside Park on the Upper West side of Manhattan.
Last year we had beautiful weather, and between 5 Parrot Heads, we were able to raise close to $4000.00. Now with all the time given to make plans and join, just think of how much we could raise for a very worthwhile cause if more Metros join the party. Alzheimer's Disease effects 1 in every 10 families, including mine, Jimmy Buffett's and at least one other Metro that I know.
I have checked the schedules; the Mets will be playing a post season night game, the Yankees will be playing golf, no hockey games are scheduled, the NBA doesn't have a schedule, and the Giants are away. For those who enjoy a weekly coronary, the Jets are home at 1:00. So, with nothing to watch other than the news or the weather channel, I can think of no better idea than to take a stroll in the park. Also, this is a leisurely walk that I've seen done in flip flops and heels, so don't worry about the exercise factor.
Like I said, "Parrot Points" have never been easier to accumulate; no pointy sticks to pick up garbage, no ticks, no worrying about over consumption of alcohol, no handing out drinks too tired, exhausted parade participants. Just a little arm twisting of your neighbors after you sign up and 4 hours of your time on a Sunday morning. So check out our team page
Join us, or if you refuse to get up off the couch on Sunday mornings, please make a donation to the team. The Chicago PHCraised some crazy amount last year ($50,000+??) and it would be great if the World's Greatest City could show them up.
Lastly, we normally have a "Phlocking" afterwards for a few cocktails (Mimosas anyone?) to fulfill our motto to "Party With A Purpose"!
Any further questions, please e-mail me, . Thanks in advance for your support and I really hope to see a huge turnout. Just think of the bragging rights you could have going to Meeting of The Minds the next week!
