Dinners with a difference

We caught up with Miss Day and Miss Night, the people behind Hunt and Gather, to find out what we can expect from their St. Patrick’s Day Festival banquets…

Right now Dublin is in the middle of a quiet revolution, creatively and culturally the city is thriving. From pop-up restaurants to art and design something is going on around every corner. Hunt and Gather are right at the centre of it all. Run by the enigmatic Miss Day and Miss Night they conceive and host regular monthly events in locations around the city. From the atmospheric locations to the food, each one creates an atmosphere all of its own. These events provide a fun and quirky night out, both for Dubliners who want to do something a little different, and visitors keen to explore all the city has to offer. We teamed up with photographer RincyKoshi to document one of their evenings and give you a taste of what you can expect from their upcoming – and very intriguing -Enchanted Banquet at the St. Patrick’s Festival. We also interviewed the two brains behind Hunt and Gather to findout more about their exciting series of events…

What made you want to start Hunt and Gather?

We both worked in events for years. We started the Little Green Gallery because we really loved throwing parties. In the end we spent more time running a bar, which is why we stopped. The first thing we organised was Nuit Blanche and it was such a success we decided to keep it going.

What can someone expect from a Hunt and Gather event?

Spontaneity, randomness and a little magic!

How do you pick the themes for your event, and how do you pick locations and food based on this?

It all happens organically. Whatever is inspiring us at the moment, so it could be something we find on Pinterest or a location could give us an idea and we turn it into something.

How often do your events take place?

Usually about three a month or one really big event. We hate it when we’re not making something happen, so we try to stay busy.

Do you ever collaborate with anyone?

Through our time on various projectswe’ve met amazing talented people, people we always work with like PETTYCASHand Gruel Guerrillaand then each time we do something, we meet new people. So we’re always collaborating.

Why do you think Dublin is the right place for things like Hunt and Gather to happen?

What’s great about Dublin is that it’s so small. So if you want to make something happen, you can find people who are willing to contribute creatively everywhere. It’s why so many cool things have been happening in the city for about the last two years.

Do you think that there is a new lease of creative and cultural life in the city right now?

Yes, definitely. The last few years have really breathed a new lease of life into the city and its tight knit community. It’s very exciting to see people taking risks, experimenting and creating beautiful and vibrant things.

What’s the most memorable Hunt and Gather event for you and why?

When we finished the Christmas dinner, everyone involved came out to thank the guests and it was a lovely moment of mutual appreciation. Also last month we did something called All Fur No Kickers and the effort everyone made was amazing, a lot of bearded men in dresses.

What do you have planned for the St. Patrick’s Day festival?

The space we have is really amazing. It’s really atmospheric and has inspired the whole thing. It’s going to be eerie, haunting and a lot of fun.

What other events at the festival are you looking forward to?

We love the parade - it’s so fun and nostalgic for us.
