Message from Mewong Ministry of Home Affairs

An earthquake registering 7.2 on the Richter scale has struck the Republic of Mewong. The epicenter is at the border of two provinces: Southern Region and South-West Region. Northern Region and North-East Region have also been affected.Initialestimatesof the affected population in need of assistance is in the order of 1 million persons, however we are still assessing the situation and will update you on the situation as soon as we receive further and more concrete information.

Effects of the Earthquake

Four of the country’s five provinces are moderately to severely affected, with the most severe effects witnessed in the South-west region. Your team will be specifically on the response to the four provinces of South-West Region, Southern Region, North-East Region and Northern Region where the impacts of the earthquake are summarized below.

Summary of Impact per Region

Eastern Region:

  • Not affected by the earthquake. Meo port and airport are fully operational to receive aid supplies.

South-west Region:

  • Assessments indicate the eastern areas were severely affected.

Southern Region:

  • Severe damage observed in the mountainous interior of the province.

Northern Region:

  • The south-western part severely damaged, rest of province quite OK.

North East Region:

  • Severely damaged in the south-eastareas.Thakhom airport fully operational

According to news from different provinces, the most affected area is around Negeri in the Southern region province and Nakhon, South west region province.Negeri area is the least developed province of the country, already an area with logistical problems. Road infrastructure is poor, not well maintained.

Logistics Information

Airports:

  • Negeri airport reported severely damaged; control tower runway notoperational.
  • Ahynta Airportis partially damaged – under further investigation.

Roads:

  • Impossible to cross the mountains by road around Negeri. It seems that the road between Nakhon and Negeri is passable.
  • The road Tonle – Thakhom:A bridge was significantly damaged and initial reports indicated that the road was blocked. The latest assessment showed that trucks are still able to pass but circumnavigating will cause minor delays.
  • See attached map indicating road blocks known so far. All these blocks looks very large and we should not expect any clearing soon.
  • MOHA permits the usage of 40MT trucks on the main highway from Meo to Nakhon via Tonle. All other roads in the country have a 10MT weight limit imposed.

Rail:

  • The railway Songhak - Ahynta is OK, but it seems that one bridge between Ahynta and Tonle was damaged.

River:

  • We are trying to secure capacity on our waterways but it will be difficult to navigate but it seems that the river from north of Lampang to Negeri is navigable by barges.
