Men’s Soccer: Santa Ana Begins State Title Defense With 9-3 Win Over San Diego City

SANTA ANA, CA – The Santa AnaCollege men’s soccer team began defense of its California Community College State Soccer Title on Tuesday (November 22)with a 9-3 win over seventh-seeded San DiegoCityCollege (18-3) in the semifinals of the 2005 Southern California Men’s Soccer Regional. Sophomore forward Peter Espinoza scored a match-high four goals and Alejandro Torres, the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Player of the Year, added two goals and an assist to lead the Dons.

Juan Perez proved why he was named the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) Player of the Year for the Knights scoring all three of San DiegoCity’s goal with Larry Emeanua assisting on two of them.

Santa Ana jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Espinoza’s first goal of the match just two minutes into the match. The sophomore forward corralled Abraham Cruz’s header that bounced off the cross bar and pounded a shot past the Knights’ Michael Stinfer.

San DiegoCity shook off the early goal to take a 2-1 lead back-to-back goals by Perez in the 18th and 20th minute. Perez drew the Knights even when he drilled a shot off a header pass from Michael Willrich and gave San DiegoCity the lead two minutes later scoring off of Emeanua’s crossing pass.

Espinoza tied the match at 2-2 with his second goal of the half in the 31st minute off a pass from Franuel Amaya and Omar Ramos gave the Dons the lead for good, 3-2, four minutes later knocking home Torres’ state-leading 22nd assist.

Santa Ana pulled away early in the second half taking a 6-2 lead on goals by Ricardo Juarez (52nd), Espinoza (59th) and Torres (71st) before Perez gave the Knights hope with his third goal and final goal of the match in the 72nd minute to make it 6-3 match.
