In gratitude for the many hours of service and training put forth by volunteer leaders, the WSPTA Board of Directors created the Leadership Academy program. The purpose of this program is to encourage, facilitate, and recognize the continuous growth of leadership shown by dedicated PTA leaders at all levels of the association. PTA leaders are encouraged to join the Leadership Academy program and submit their activity yearly to create a record of their leadership in the association.

Membership Applications and Updates are due by March 1, 2015

Important information and guidelines are included on page 9 of this packet.

Important Information about Leadership Academy

  1. **New for 2015-16: Points will be accepted for up to two years: the current school year and the prior school year. (Through March of 2015, points from all years will be accepted.)

Example: March of 2016, points will only be accepted for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years.

2. You must include dates (month and year) and location (including region) where noted for points to be awarded.

3. The leadership committee may return applications that are incomplete or illegible.

4. Points can be earned for holding the same position or attending the same conference for multiple years.

Example: Serving as PTA treasurer 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 would earn the applicant 4 points for each year. Attending convention in 2013 and 2014 would earn 10 points for each year.

5. Points are given for attendance at workshops, conferences, or convention; not for each individual class attended at those events.

Example: Attendance at a region fall conference in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 would earn the applicant 6 points for each year, no matter how many class sessions were attended.

6. Presenters attending a conference for the sole purpose of presenting will be given the points only for presenting and not for attending. If a presenter presents more than one class at a conference they may claim the points for each class presented.

7. If you are an officer and board member at the same local unit (in the same year) you may only receive points for one position (the higher value).

8. If you are an officer at one local unit and a board member at another, you will earn points for both positions.

9. In a given year, if you are a local unit officer or a local unit board member, you may claim a maximum of 3 points per unit (1 point for each committee chair position held) for serving as a local unit committee chair during that same year.

Example: The vice president for the 2013-2014 school year also served as a chair for 4 committees during the 2013-2014 school year. The vice president may only claim 3 points total in that school year for serving as a committee chair. Chairing more than 3 committees at the same school earns no additional points. This limitation is intended to encourage new leadership in committee chair positions.

10. “Community advocacy for a public policy issue”: This is community-level action on a public policy issue in support of WSPTA legislative positions (current short and long term platform). It may include testimony before a policy making body (school board, city or county council, state legislature), participation on a task force (school board, city or county council, state legislature), or chairing/leading community education programs on WSPTA issues.

11. “Representation to Other Organizations” or “Presenting Classes to Another Organization must be at the request of the WSPTA President.

13. Please do not resubmit points that have been included in previously submitted applications; records are maintained at the WSPTA office.

14. Please keep a copy of your application for your records.
