LINDBERGH CHAPTER COMMUNIQUE

Thoughts & Ponderings from the President - Patti Barton, CPS

Spring is in the air and I can't believe that my term of office is almost over. It doesn't seem possible. So much to do, and so little time to do it. But one thing I can say… we've all worked hard and I "think" we've had some fun along the way.

I don't know where to begin. I guess looking back over the past 10 months, we've accomplished quite a bit. We started out with a bang with our Leadership Team Training in Columbia, MO in July with all of our officers and most committee chairs attending. What a great way to start the year. We captured many ideas and it certainly got us off to a running start. As I was writing my year-end annual report for Mo. Division, I reminisced and it made me smile.

We have had outstanding programs throughout the year. In August we started off with a recap of experiences from attending the IAAP seminars and educational opportunities readily available to us such as the Educational Conference, Mo. Division Meeting in Boys Town, and the International Convention that was held in Washington, DC. Lots to be proud of there…2 members attended the Educational Conference, our "own" Joann Hailey was installed as the Mo. Division President at Boys Town, and our nominee for the IAAP Excellence Award -- Monsanto -- was honored at our International Convention as the WINNER OF THE IAAP EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR 2004! Wow! But it doesn't stop there…in October we hosted our Annual Bosses Breakfast and we outdid ourselves again…over 75 bosses and administrative professionals were in attendance to see and hear Kay Enlow, President-Elect of IAAP, present her "Building Blocks of Leadership." It was an excellent program and once again…WE HAD FUN!!

But we not only have fun in this chapter…we work hard as well for our community and those less fortunate than us. We partnered with several charitable associations in the St. Louis area this year. Our first project was collecting new school supplies for the St. Louis Teachers Surplus Recycling Center. Our members provided a huge trunk load of new school supplies for this association. At our November Holiday & Community Event, we sponsored a food drive for Operation Food Search and a winter clothes collection for the Division of Children Services "Warming Tree." This was a project sponsored by the People of Faith, a 501 (c) (3) organization that solicits donations to aid children currently in court custody. Our members dug deep into their closets and pockets to donate hats, gloves, scarves, coats, games/DVDs, etc., to benefit the teenagers currently in the State's care at the Division of Children Services. These efforts take a lot of "team work" and that is something that we definitely know how to do!!

And just when you don't think it could get any better…guess what???? IT DOES!! On April 26th, the Lindbergh Chapter celebrated its 45th anniversary as a chapter. Special thanks go to the St. Louis Chapter who chartered us on April 24, 1960. At that time we had 20 members and 2 charter members (Gladys Maeser and Alberta Gammon) of which Gladys is still a member. She was invited to attend our two-fold celebration of Administrative Professionals Week and the Lindbergh Chapter 45th Birthday but was unable to be with us. We were honored to have in attendance 7 of our past presidents to celebrate this occasion with us: Marsha Bright, Joann Digman, Joann Hailey, Joan Hardin, Jean Kelemen, Peggy Harber, and Irene Adams who also was honored for her years of membership (1975 - 2005). Also on hand was Susie Doerge, long-time member (1976 - 2005). Our Special Events Committee outdid themselves with providing a fun time for all with a wonderful Silent Auction (with over 60 items on hand) and a very talented entertainer by the name of Dean Christopher who put on a show entitled, "The Rat Pack & More." You know you've been entertained when you've been serenaded by "Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, and even Jerry Lewis"!!! A wonderful dinner was served along with our own Lindbergh Chapter Birthday Cake, and the evening ended with many members winning some great attendance prizes along with some "good deals" on the Silent Auction. It truly was an amazing evening…one we won't forget for a long time.

With that we come to the end of the year -- which could be one of the most important times of the year ... Nominations for Officers for the 2005-06 year. This is your chance to step forward and share your talents to help keep the Lindbergh Chapter going for another 45 years. I hope you all have been receptive to our Nominating Committee of Charlene Faulkner and Grace Bailey, who have been contacting you for your opportunity to share of yourself and commit to a leadership role in your IAAP organization. As I've said in the past, "you always get out what you put in to an organization or commitment," so I hope you all with think seriously about either serving as an officer or leading a committee for the 2005-06 year. I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication. This has been a "GREAT" year and one that I won't ever forget.

Patti Barton, CPS

Nominating CommitteeUpdate

The Lindbergh Chapter IAAP Nominating Committee needs you….

that’s right, Y-O-U!!

As most of you heard at our March chapter meeting, at this time, we do

NOT have a full slate of officers for the 2005-2006 year. This is unfortunate,

knowing that we have many talented members who could share their knowledge

and skills to help our chapter continue in its success.

Below are the officer positions that need to be filled. A few of the positions have candidates that are interested in filling the office. A few positions are still empty. More than one candidate per office is welcomed and encouraged. Voting will take place at the May 24th chapter meeting.

President-(this position does not get voted on)

President-Elect- no candidates at this time

Vice President-one potential candidate at this time

Treasurer-no candidates at this time

Secretary - one potential candidate at this time

Here are a couple of things to think about…

If we all take a little piece of the puzzle, the more our chapter can do!

If we all take a little piece of the puzzle, more people will help and feel involved!

If we all take a little piece of the puzzle, it’s less work for everyone!

If you would like to jump right in there and take on a big piece of the puzzle, by all means, do it! But, we aren’t asking you to take a big piece of the puzzle if that’s not what you want to do. If everyone would take just one small piece, when we put all the little pieces together, we’ll end up with one big beautiful, successful, and fun puzzle!!

Please think about becoming an officer, committee lead or committee member. We’re all in this together and we’ll learn and grow from sharing our experiences. Remember also that serving as an officer or as a committee head has a two-fold purpose... one to serve your chapter and the other to earn recertification points for your CPS/CAP.

If you want to be an active member and do your part to keep our chapter heading in the right direction, please notify one of us on the Nominating Committee now. Most everyone in the chapter should have been contacted by one of us. But, if for whatever reason, you have not yet been contacted and you are interested or if you had previously been contacted but declined and have now changed your mind, once again, please contact us as soon as possible!!

Thank you and please give us a call to let us know where you would like to help.

Your Nominating Committee,

Grace BaileyCharlene Faulkner

OFFERINGS FROM ….OFFICE TEAM

**************************************

Dressing the Part of a Professional

With the weather warming, you may be cleaning out your closet in preparation for summer. If so, give equal consideration to the clothes you wear to work. In a recent survey by OfficeTeam, 81 percent of employees said a person's office attire affects his or her professional image; nearly half (46 percent) of respondents said wardrobe significantly impacts how someone is perceived on the job.

Dressing professionally provides instant credibility and signals to clients, customers and colleagues that they're working with someone who takes the position seriously. Dress codes have changed since the economic downturn, and these shifts may not yet be reflected in your company's policies. Always be on the safe side by adhering to the "unofficial dress code" and observing what your supervisors and colleagues are wearing.

While company guidelines regarding proper business attire vary, the following faux pas should be avoided in most office environments:

  • Wearing your heart on your sleeve. No matter how committed you are to a cause or political belief, T-shirts, buttons and other items that advocate potentially controversial opinions are not appropriate in the office. Even if your dress code is casual, steer clear of attire that might offend others.
  • Pop-star panache. Although your job may not require a business suit, you should still try to look professional at all times. Avoid wearing midriff-baring shirts, low-rise pants and too-tight clothing.
  • The grunge look. Wrinkled, soiled or torn clothing never leaves a good impression. Make sure everything about your appearance - from your shoes to your haircut - is neat and orderly.
  • Heavy metal. Avoid excessive or ornate jewelry and other accessories. Simple is chic in the workplace.
  • Overpowering fragrance. Scent should be subtle. Many people are sensitive to perfumes and colognes - some are even allergic - so err on the conservative side.

OfficeTeam is the world's leading staffing service specializing in highly skilled administrative and office support professionals. The company has more than 300 locations worldwide, and offers online job search services at .For more information, call the St. Louis office at (314) 878-7535.
