Member of PALS Elected Mayor of Cavan Town

After the recent local elections, Paddy Conaty was the successful candidate in the Cavan Town Council Election and was elected to the position of Mayor in a tied vote after having his name pulled out of a hat.

Paddy is a member of the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland and also a member of the Cavan Network of People with Disabilities in Ireland Ltd., for the past number of years since he retired on health grounds from being the Chief Ambulance Officer of the North Eastern Health Board.

It is his third time to be elected into this position, the last time being 10 years ago. He is going into his 26th year as a member of the Local Authority.

Paddy retired after 14 years service as the Chief Ambulance Officer in 1999, he also retired, this June, from the membership of Cavan County Council for health reasons.

While disappointed at not being able to go forward for Cavan County Council elections on this occasion, after 13 years membership, he was pleased to be able to put his name forward for the Cavan Town Council elections.

He has been a member of the Fianna Fail Party for many years, his father also served on Cavan County Council for 41 years.

As part of Paddy’s election literature, he highlighted the Cavan Network of P.W.D.I.

He has, for the last 18 years, had the condition of Parkinson’s Disease. A major disappointment for him was the abolition of being a Health Board member, of which he had been since 1989. He raised, on numerous occasions, the lack of neurologists in Ireland, highlighting the fact that Albania has more neurologists per head of population than here in Ireland.

The Cavan Network of PWDI congratulate him on his appointment as Mayor, and know that he will always be available to promote the Network and the policies of P.W.D.I.
