Jack and Pebbla Nelson

My grandfather, John Nelson was born in Oland, Sweden in 1888 and immigrated to Manistee, Michigan in 1905, with $10.00 in his pocket. Grandpa was a craftsman and a painter and eventually started a paint and wallpaper business on River Street in Manistee, across from the current police station. I was told I was conceived at Grandpa’s cottage on Lake Shore Drive, where I spent every childhood summer of my life swimming and having camp fires on the beach.

I was born in Lansing, Michigan where my father was a commercial artist and my mother was an executive at a Nation Cosmetic Corporation. I attended Grace Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1961. After high school, I was drafted and spent two years in the service, after being granted an early out for college, I graduated from Michigan State University in 1974.

In 1976 I accepted a position as the Director of Resource Development for the county of Clinton. My first wife, Diana, and I attended St. John’s Lutheran Church where our children, Taya, Tarin, and Chad, were baptized.

In 1985, I accepted a position in the city of Lansing as the Director of Building Safety, where I worked for 18 years.

After a divorce in 1991, I meet Pebbla. We were married in 1994, at Hope Lutheran Church in Dewitt, Michigan, where we were members.

Pebbla was born in Mexico City, Mexico; her family immigrated to the United States in 1967, and resided in Detroit, Michigan. Pebbla’s father was an editor for the Detroit Free Press and her mother worked for Catholic Social Services as a case worker for the homeless. Pebbla attended a private Catholic grade school and graduated from Bishop Gallagher High School in Harper Woods, Michigan.

After high school Pebbla attended Northern Michigan University where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing with a minor in Communications. After graduating, Pebbla worked as a narrative model, a home health nurse and a public speaker for the State of Michigan teaching medical billing and terminology. Pebbla also worked as a consultant for Baker College where developed an Associates Degree program for Medical Billing.

Pebbla was raised Byzantine Catholic converting to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod prior to being married in 1994. Pebbla believes that families should be of the same faith to build their lives in Christ and be productive members of society. Pebbla has been diligent in ensuring that all of our grandchildren be baptized in the Lutheran Church.

In 2003, Pebbla retired from The State of Michigan and me, from the City of Lansing. We moved to our old fishing shack on Pine Creek, property which had been in the family for 50 years. While there we became members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. We attended this church for 10 years prior to building our current home in Onekama in 2013.

We are currently attending Trinity Lutheran Onekama where we hope to become members.

Darrell retired from the skilled trades with the significant portion of his career spent at Fletcher Paper Co. in Alpena. Formerly members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dearborn Heights, they are looking forward to being active and contributing members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Onekama.

John and Loree Sprawka

Loree was born in Frankfort and has lived in Onekama most of her life. She graduated from Onekama High School. She worked at West Shore Medical Center for 33 years, 27 years in EMS, before retiring in 2015. She currently works as a medical security officer at Little River Casino. Loree loves to knit and crochet and for many years has knitted mittens for charity. She has been known to make 45 pairs of socks for Christmas gifts.

John was born and raised in the Chicago area. He graduated from Driscoll High School before moving to Onekama in 1970. He is retired.

John and Loree have been married for 45 years. They have 2 children, Steven (Carol) Sprawka and Cherrie (Andrew) Burch and 2 grandsons, Andrew Burch Jr and Derek Sprawka.
