1.  Approving and endorsing LIVES research planning workshop objectives

The objectives are fine. Objective three will identify research organizations as well as researchers

2.  Finalizing the workshop program: comments and suggestions were made on the previous draft program prepared by Dr Berhanu. Finally the following content and sequence were agree upon by the group

Plenary:

1.  Iain wright makes a welcome speech representing the ILRI DG and the steering committee. So no need to have welcome speech from Drs. Azage or Simon

2.  Ewen introduces the workshop objectives, the program and the expected outcomes at the end of the three days

3.  DG/ DDG of EIAR makes the opening speech

4.  Dr. Azage gives introduction to LIVES

5.  Dirk presents the proposed possible Livestock interventions; while Phipip/Gebre / IWMI presents the proposed possible Irrigation agriculture intervention

6.  Dr Berhanu explains the major research areas in LIVES; diagnostic, action and impact

7.  Dr. Azage gives brief summary of potential livestock research areas

8.  Dr. Simon/ Philp gives brief summary of potential irrigated agriculture research areas

9.  Ephrem/ Kathy gives brief presentation on mainstreaming gender in irrigated and livestock value chain development

Group work: Different structures and categories for the group work came forward. Finally considering the time, the mix of participants, the following were agreed upon

·  There will be six working groups:

1.  Beef (Small and large ruminants),

2.  Dairy,

3.  Poultry,

4.  Apiculture,

5.  Irrigated vegetables, fruits and fodder

6.  Extension / capacity development and Knowledge management

·  In all the group works; cross cutting issues of gender, environment, extension/ knowledge management/ capacity development/ food safety and crop- livestock interaction will be incorporated

·  Workshop objective 2 and 3 will be realized through 3 major activities that will be done during the group work. The group work activities are;

§  Review and refine presented interventions in light of the potential livestock and irrigated agriculture research areas presented

§  Prioritize the research topics for each of the commodities and identify the nature of research to be carried out

§  Allocate partner institutions/ individuals, locations and the responsibilities ( leadership and others)

·  In the group works, the participants coming from different programs and activities will be encouraged on how LIVES research topics could be aligned with theirs. For instance

§  Barbra/ Tom could say something how they would like to see LIVES as an input to the CRPs showing the relevance of LIVES for CRP activities

§  BeCA is on goat project in Ethiopia and some of LIVES sites overlaps with BeCAs. How to harmonize this with us could be raised by Dr. Tadelle

§  Aligning with CRP programs of IWMI could be raised by IWMI team

·  Management of the research governance and ways of using graduate students will be discussed during the group works

·  Guideline for the group work will be prepared by Dr. Berhanu

·  For now, university will not be part of this research planning workshop. Since the university research system is under EIAR, their research issues will be addressed through representatives of EIAR

·  Steering committee member in bureaus of agriculture and livestock agency will not take part in this event as the workshop is exclusively of research. Those steering committee members from research will join

·  Some participants coming from the national research have little or no knowledge about LIVES, so better to have a half day session with them before the workshop for increased familiarization

4.  Action points

Action points from this meeting are;

1.  Dr Azage writes letter to EIAR and RARIS so as the organizations assign someone to take part in the workshop

2.  Dirk and Philip prepare the possible livestock and irrigated agriculture interventions

3.  Dr. Berhanu to come up with refined workshop program

4.  Dr Getenet to handle communication flow with the ministry until the ministry officially appoints representative

5.  Fanos to post workshop announcement on the LIVES website and ILRI websites

6.  Dr Getenet and Dr Berhanu to organize sensitization meeting for EIAR partners, possibly in the week of March 11-15, 2013

7.  Dr. Berhanu to prepare guideline for the group work
