December 2014 minutes: Treasurer Kim Weglar moved to accept the minutes as presented and Karen Andrews seconded. The motion carried.

Treasurer’s report: Kim Weglar. Treasurer Weglar met with audit committee member Molly Grundner on Dec. 22 2014 and reviewed the bank statement. All items were in order and we are in compliance with our insurance. Treasurer Weglar reported that all the teacher grants were in but there was still some remaining funds in the budget; it was decided to extend the teacher grant deadline to March 1 2015. Most of the expenses reported this month are related to the teacher grants, TOY and senior activities. Finally Treasurer Weglar noted that the state surplus store has nice office chairs for 10.00 which could be a nice source for teacher chairs.

President’s report: Dee Deanhardt. President Deanhardt reported that the next BAC meeting is scheduled for Jan. 26 2015 at Briarcliff Elementary. She attached Bill Fletcher’s report to the meeting notes to share with the board; the report points out the changes to our 10 point grading system that will start for the 2015-16 school year. President Deanhardt reported that the Streetsafe program is scheduled for Saturday May 9 2015 and that Ms. Weigold will chair the event. For the SAC Dance committee, Christina Ammerman and Kathy Enright were added to it. Treasurer Weglar moved to accept these additions to the committee and Sandra Richards seconded. The motion carried. Finally President Deanhardt noted we need a full nominating committee and asked members to think of potential candidates.

Principal’s report: Karen Summers. Principal Summers is asking parents to nominate GHHS teachers for “being excellent” teachers at GHHS. The award is being sponsored by Prestonwood Country Club and the Umstead Hotel. Parents can vote by emailing a short statement about why your nominee is excellent; send your emails to . The deadline is Feb.9 2015. Principal Summers noted that on Jan.29 a 30 minute meeting for BYOD will be held and a 30 minute college session will also be held with NC State. These events will occur on the same night as Meet the Teacher night. Parents must sign a permission slip for their kids to participate in BYOD. It is hoped that more parents can attend these meeting by scheduling them on a single evening. Finally Principal Summers noted that many parents are not dropping their kids off in the designated drop off area for carpool; she expressed her concern that this is making the carpool situation dangerous and is asking parents to please comply.

VP report: Chelly Williams. VP Williams noted that Peggy Brescia is working to get the Publix loyalty cards linked to GHHS and is also promoting this same program with Lowes grocery store. For staff appreciation, a soup supper for the teachers and staff is scheduled for Jan.29 at Meet the Teacher Night. Spirit wear will be for sale that night as well. A Reflections Celebration on Thursday Jan.29 is also scheduled for the afternoon; there will be a lunch for the students that participated and gift cards for those who placed. The PTSA membership is up to 972 members with one additional membership form received but not yet processed. All the NCPTA cards have been distributed. The Jr./Sr. Dance is scheduled for Feb.7 and the permission forms should be available on the web soon. A plan of work (POW) was submitted for the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Jean Miller made a motion to accept the POW, Chelly Williams seconded and the motion carried. POWs for Spirit Night and Bonfire Activity and SAC Welcome Back Committee was submitted, after the fact. It was noted the committees did a good job of staying on budget and hosting these events. Since the events had already occurred, no votes were taken on these POWs.

New Business: a curriculum fair for grade 9 will be held on Feb. 19 2015 at 6pm and the curriculum fair for grades 10-12 will be held on Feb.24 2015 at 6pm. The NCPTA has upcoming webinars in January and February; all board members are welcome to participate. The prom is scheduled for May 16 2015.
