What is an annotated bibliography? A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, encyclopedias, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called “References” or “Works Cited.” An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Your annotations must include all of the following:

A. Focus Question: Which focus question(s) did this source answer?

B. Summary: Summarize the source. What are the main points and ideas? What is the point of this book, article, or website? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this source is about, what would you say?

C. Evaluate: After summarizing the source, you must evaluate it. Is it a useful source? Why or why not? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Was it helpful in answering your focus questions?

D. Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and evaluated your source, you need to ask how it fits in your research. How did it help your research? Did you learn anything from the source? Did this source change how you think about your topic? How?

Library Days:

*If you are caught doing anything besides working on your research, you will lose points on your final grade (talking, sleeping, using the computer for anything other than research, etc.)

Once you choose a research topic, you will use only the websites I have provided for you. You must have at least THREE sources total. At least ONE should be a web source and at least ONE should be a print source. So, you can have TWO web sources and ONE print source or TWO print sources and ONE web source. I suggest using encyclopedias for your print source. Use these sources to answer the following focus questions:

  1. What is the history of your topic?
  2. What makes this topic different or interesting?
  3. What are some examples of your topic?
  4. What people/group of people are associated with your topic?
  5. Fun fact

All focus questions must be answered. Some sources will answer more than one question. For each source you must include a bibliographic entry and the actual annotation. There will be a total of THREE paragraphs (1 per source).

Formatting Directions:

  • MLA format (Times New Romans, 12 pt font, double space, last name/pg # header, etc.)
  • Follow correct bibliographic citation format for each source.
  • Each entry must be double-spaced and in alphabetical order (do not forget the hanging indent).
  • Following each citation, you will write your annotation in ONE paragraph. Make sure to complete A, B, C, and D in this paragraph.
  • Paraphrase, DO NOT plagiarize. Plagiarizing will result in a 0% F. No exceptions!
  • Turn in all THREE note-taking guides with your typed annotated bibliography (Worth 50 points).
