Medical Post Graduate Degrees & GMC Scheme

  1. GMC International Sponsorship Scheme for International Medical Graduates

The University is approved by the GMC to run the International Sponsorship Scheme for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). This means that IMGs can apply to the University to be sponsored to receive full GMC registration whilst undertaking either the MCh in Minimally Invasive Surgery or the MCh in Otorhinolaryngology. This will allow the doctor to be involved in patient contact at the hospital to which they attend their placements. It should be noted that the criteria that needs to be met to qualify for this scheme is very strict and full details can be found on pages 23-25 of our brochure and also in the attached application form and flow chart.

Should the doctor not meet the criteria for the above GMC sponsored scheme we would still be delighted to accept them onto the programme. However, they will only be able to observe whilst on their placement. It should be noted that the student will have full use of our clinical skills lab at the University to continue practising their skills.

  1. Work placements

All our programmes offer the opportunity of work placements as follows:

-MCh Minimally Invasive Surgery (4 discrete pathways leading to an MCh in either orthopaedics / urology / general surgery / gynaecology) – students will have the opportunity to gain unique placement experience of the Da Vinci robot at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital under the expert supervision and guidance of Mr Eddy and his team, in addition students will gain direct experience working with internationally renowned clinical experts across Kent and London.

-MCh Otorhinolaryngology – Placements will be available at local hospitals, including Medway Maritime Hospital.

-MSc Cardiology programme – students are offered observational placements at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

-MSc in Anaesthesia (Perioperative care) – Placements will be available at local hospitals, including Medway Maritime Hospital.

  1. Career prospects

Many of our students have found positions at UK hospitals in senior roles. Students have also returned to their home country and continued their professional development using the qualification and skills learned here at Canterbury Christ Church University.

  1. Research opportunities

There are opportunities for students to apply for PhD study here working with internationally renowned clinicians. Details of our teaching team can be found on our website. We will shortly be opening a Research Lab at the campus where further research opportunities will be available.
