Medical Lake Middle School Physical Education Syllabus

A. Goals: The Physical Education program will introduce students to knowledge and skills that will help them lead a fit, active, and healthy lifestyle. We will emphasize the establishment of healthy habits good attitudes, sport skill & knowledge, strategy, and physical improvement.
B. Course Outline: The Fitnessgram Physical Fitness Test will be administered at the beginning of the school year, middle, and end. It is an important tool for gauging each student’s level of physical fitness. Grade levels will participate in activities derived from the following list during the school year:
Softball, Golf, Flag Football, Fitness Activities, Soccer, Speedball, Pickleball, Badminton
Bowling, Ultimate Frisbee/Football, Floor Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Walk-Jog-Run, Bicycling-we need volunteers for this if you are able!
C. Expectations for Fitness class:
● Come to class prepared -proper clothes, shoes, & attitude.
● Proper locker room behavior -sit on benches & wait to exit quietly with teacher.
● In the gym, students will go directly to their spots for roll.
● Leave all equipment alone unless directed by the teacher to use it.
● Always give YOUR best effort!
● Be respectful to others and your teachers.
● Clothes go home every Friday!
D. Fitness Days: We will have a intense fitness day at least once a week. We will also have access to a fitness room with exercise machines, bikes, etc.
E. Clothing Required for Physical Education Classes:
1. Shirt: t-shirt or workout type shirt (no cut-offs or tank tops)
2. Shorts/Sweatpants: workout type (must be athletic; no zippers or buttons)
3. Shoes: Clean tennis/gym shoes only for the gym only (no hiking boots, shoes that are not tied tightly, or that leave marks on the gym floor. We require that you have clean shoes just for PE in the gym.
4. Socks: Athletic socks used just for PE (in case your wear flip flops you will have socks)
5. Deodorant: have some in your locker (no glass or aerosol cans, no AXE)
6. Jewelry: No jewelry is allowed to be worn for safety reasons, stud earrings and sports watches are exceptions.
F. SPECIAL HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: The teacher needs to be notified if doctor identified allergy, asthma, chronic pain, injury etc. exist.
1. Asthma: If an inhaler is used, it must be brought to class everyday.
2. Bee Allergies: If allergic to bee stings, make sure an epi-pen is in the school office.
3. Parent Notes: A parental note will only excuse the student for up to 3 days then a doctor’s note will be needed.
4. Doctor Notes: Any time a doctor visit is made, a note from the doctor must be turned in to the teacher if the student is to be excused from activity. On the note needs to be what the student cannot do as well as what the student can do in PE. If a visit is made for an injury, a note must be turned in stating clearance to participate.
5. Open Wounds: All open wounds and cuts must be covered according to MRSA Safety Guidelines.
H. Standards-Based Grading:
Students will be graded on the development of motor skills and movement concepts, understanding of health-related and skill-related fitness including feedback, evaluation, self-assessment, improvement and participation in cardiovascular endurance activities.
● State Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5
o Sport Skills/Fitness Movement ------4 points per skill/unit
o Physical Fitness Safety Habits & Hygiene------5 points/week
o Cooperation/Teamwork/Strategy------5 points/week
o Cardiovascular Endurance------5 points/week
✓ Grading Rubrics for each sport skill will be done on the following grading scale:
4=Exceeding Standards 3=Meeting Standards 2=Approaching Standards 1=Attempting Standards
I. Consequences:
Not suiting up for class
1. Warning
2. Parent Call Home
3. Referral to Principal
4. Referral to Principal & Action taken
Other Consequences:
● Any disruptive, disrespectful behavior or sent out of class ………….… Referral
● Tardy to Locker Room/Gym...... Tardy in Skyward
