Why use TENS:

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a drug free, non-invasive pain relief proceedure recommended by midwives, widely and safely used during childbirth.

How does TENS work:

The TENS machine sends low frequency electrical impulses through electrodes (adhesive pads) into the skin. This stimulates ‘endorphins’, your body’s natural defences against pain. Normally, it takes 30-40min stimulation use of the TENS to reach max level endorphin release which can last for hours.

When can you use TENS:

You can use TENS at home as soon as your contraction pain starts and take it to hospital with you. Remember to take it off if you use a birthing pool.

After you have had your baby, if you are in pain consider using the unit, it will help with relief. Even if you have had a caesarean you can use the unit to give pain relief.

Side Effects:

There are no known side effects form TENS use.

Electrode Placement for Labour Pain:

Four electrodes (adhesive pads) are attached to the region of the back as shown in the Picture.

There are 4 pads. Two pads per lead. Lead (A) is attached to one plug socket and lead (B) to the second plug socket located on the top of the TENS machine.

IMPORTANT: Never cross (East -West direction) the spine with the two pads of the same lead .
